What does a part time building engineer do?

A Part Time Building Engineer is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and overseeing the mechanical, electrical, and structural systems within a building on a part-time basis. Their duties often include inspecting HVAC systems, performing routine maintenance, addressing repair requests, and ensuring that building operations comply with safety standards. They may also help with energy management and coordinate with other contractors or building staff as needed. Working part-time means their hours and responsibilities might vary depending on the needs of the property.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time building engineer?

To thrive as a Part Time Building Engineer, you need a solid understanding of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing), basic repair skills, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training or certifications are often preferred. Familiarity with maintenance management systems, building automation controls, and relevant safety certifications (such as OSHA 10) is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication with tenants and team members set top performers apart. These skills ensure efficient building operations, prompt issue resolution, and a safe, well-maintained environment.

What are some common challenges faced by part time building engineers, and how can they effectively manage their workload?

Part-time building engineers often face the challenge of balancing maintenance tasks and urgent repairs within limited working hours. Efficient time management and clear communication with the full-time engineering team are essential to ensure that critical issues are addressed promptly and routine maintenance is scheduled appropriately. Utilizing detailed shift handover notes and staying updated on building management systems can also help part-time engineers stay aligned with ongoing projects and prevent gaps in service. Building strong relationships with property management and other maintenance staff can further streamline workflow and foster a supportive work environment.

Job description

Tech Intern GOLFBALLS.COM - Lafayette, LA

IT / Engineering Department | Full-Time or Part-Time | Flexible hours around your schedule

Golfballs.com is growing, and we're looking for a Tech Intern to help keep our large-format UV printers running. This is a hands-on role - available full-time or part-time, with schedules built around school or other commitments: you'll own routine maintenance on the production printers and pick up real IT and computer hardware experience along the way. No prior printer experience required - if you're mechanically inclined and willing to learn, we'll train you.

What You'll Do:

Own routine maintenance on our large-format UV printers - printhead cleaning, calibration, and ink system checks

Monitor printer performance, run first-line troubleshooting, and escalate anything you can't resolve

Keep the maintenance logs and troubleshooting documentation for our production equipment up to date

Assist with general IT support - basic hardware, software, and networking issues

Assist with building, setting up, and configuring computers and workstations for new users

Collaborate with team members and supervisors to keep operations running smoothly

Pitch in on other IT and production projects as they come up

What We're Looking For:

Working toward a degree in IT, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (preferred)

Available full-time or part-time - part-time is typically 20-30 hours per week, scheduled around your classes

Basic understanding of IT concepts (hardware, software, networking)

Mechanically inclined - comfortable working with your hands on equipment and machines

Willingness to learn and take direction

Good communication and teamwork skills

Comfortable working on your feet in a hands-on production environment

Physical Requirements:

Able to stand and walk for extended periods in a production environment

Able to lift and move materials weighing 25-50 lbs (with assistance available for heavier items)

Comfortable with frequent bending, reaching, and kneeling to service printers

Willing to handle printer inks, solvents, and cleaning chemicals following safety procedures and using provided PPE

Bonus Points For:

Prior exposure to computer builds/repairs, networking basics, or machine troubleshooting

Experience with basic hand tools

Interest in manufacturing, production, or industrial technology

Why Join Golfballs.com?

Training & Growth - Learn UV printer maintenance and IT fundamentals from the team that runs them daily

Cutting-Edge Equipment - Hands-on time with large-format UV printing technology

Team-Oriented Culture - Join a supportive and fast-paced work environment

Flexible Scheduling - Full-time or part-time hours that work around your classes
