About United Defense Tactical

United Defense Tactical is the only reality-based training program for civilians. Our Scottsdale facility combines a full BJJ mat space, padded scenario equipment, and laser-based firearms simulators — no live fire, no live rounds, ever. We train members to be safe, confident, and prepared for real-world situations, and we do it in an environment that's welcoming to beginners, women, and families.

TRAIN TO BE SAFE. TRAIN TO BE CONFIDENT. TRAIN TO SURVIVE.

The Role

We're hiring part-time contract instructors who can teach across all three of our core disciplines: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Close Quarter Combat, and Combat Conditioning. This is not a specialist role — we need well-rounded coaches who can lead any class on the schedule and connect the disciplines into one integrated self-defense system for our members.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

Deliver progressive BJJ classes for all experience levels. Curriculum covers fundamentals, guard work, positional control, submissions, escapes, sweeps, and practical self-defense applications that translate to real-world scenarios. Classes combine technical drilling, positional sparring, live rolling, and scenario-based training.

Close Quarter Combat (CQC)

Lead striking, clinch work, weapon defense, and multi-attacker scenarios. Focus on decision-making under stress, situational awareness, and effective response to realistic threats. Integrates with our simulator scenarios to bridge empty-hand skills to weapon-involved situations.

Combat Conditioning

Program and coach strength, conditioning, and movement patterns that support tactical performance. The goal is work capacity, functional strength, and durability for combatives — not general fitness for its own sake.
Top instructors will have opportunities to lead multiple sessions per week, host workshops, and develop ongoing series as programs grow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver safe, progressive classes across BJJ, CQC, and Combat Conditioning for groups of 8–10 students

  • Teach with a focus on technique, leverage, decision-making under stress, and real-world application

  • Foster a supportive, empowering, non-intimidating environment — especially for beginners, women, and members new to combatives

  • Incorporate scenario-based training and integrate with our simulator technology to build muscle memory under stress

  • Collect attendance and feedback data to continuously improve programming

  • Collaborate on workshops, community safety events, and seminars

  • Stay current with best practices across all three disciplines

Ideal Candidate

Required — must be able to teach all three:

  • BJJ:
2+ years teaching experience; brown belt or higher strongly preferred, plus recognized instructor credentials (Gracie Combatives, Gracie Survival Tactics, Rener Gracie programs, or equivalent). Co-ed teaching experience essential.

  • CQC:
Military, law enforcement, or serious combatives background; experience with striking, weapon defense, and multi-attacker scenarios

  • Combat Conditioning:
Practical programming background for combatives (CSCS, CF-L2, or comparable experience). Formal certification preferred but not required if the coaching track record is there.

Additional requirements:

  • Based in the Phoenix metro area

  • Exceptional communication, empathy, and motivational skills — you build people up, you don't break them down

  • Trauma-informed instruction background a plus

  • Must pass background check

  • Must carry or obtain personal general liability insurance (minimum $1M per occurrence) with United Defense Tactical named as Additional Insured; proof required prior to starting

Why Join UDT

  • Flexible contract with a clear path to increased hours as enrollment grows

  • Full access to our facility — BJJ mats, padded suits, and laser-based simulators for the most realistic scenario training available

  • Free membership and team support events

  • Be part of a mission that directly improves lives and community safety

  • Instructor lineage tied to Special Forces and law enforcement backgrounds — you'll be teaching alongside serious professionals
