Part Time Battery Energy Storage information

What is a part time battery energy storage job?

Part-time battery energy storage jobs involve working in roles that support the development, operation, or maintenance of battery storage systems, but on a part-time basis. These jobs can include positions such as technicians, engineers, analysts, or project assistants. Workers may be responsible for monitoring battery performance, assisting with installations, conducting maintenance, or supporting research and development projects. Part-time roles are ideal for students, professionals seeking flexible hours, or individuals looking to gain experience in the renewable energy sector. Battery energy storage is a rapidly growing field, offering many opportunities for those interested in sustainable energy solutions.

What are the typical responsibilities and expectations for someone working part-time in a battery energy storage role?

In a part-time Battery Energy Storage position, you can expect to support the installation, maintenance, and monitoring of battery storage systems. Responsibilities often include assisting with system inspections, collecting performance data, troubleshooting minor technical issues, and collaborating with engineers or full-time technicians. You may also help ensure safety protocols are followed and contribute to regular reporting on system health. This role is well-suited for individuals seeking hands-on experience in renewable energy while balancing other commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time battery energy storage technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Battery Energy Storage Technician, you need foundational knowledge in electrical systems, energy storage technology, and relevant safety protocols, often supported by a technical degree or certification in electrical engineering or renewable energy. Familiarity with battery management systems (BMS), energy storage monitoring software, and diagnostic tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help technicians excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with team members. These skills ensure safe, efficient maintenance and operation of energy storage systems, supporting reliable power delivery and grid stability.

What is the difference between Part Time Battery Energy Storage vs Part Time Renewable Energy Technician?

AspectPart Time Battery Energy StoragePart Time Renewable Energy Technician
CredentialsRelevant certifications in energy systems, electrical work, or battery technologyCertifications in renewable energy systems, electrical work, or solar/wind installation
Work EnvironmentIndoor and outdoor settings involving electrical systems and energy storage unitsOutdoor sites, solar/wind farms, and installation environments
Industry UsageEnergy storage companies, utility providers, renewable energy firmsRenewable energy companies, solar/wind installation firms, utilities

Both roles involve working with energy systems, but Part Time Battery Energy Storage focuses on managing and maintaining energy storage units, while Part Time Renewable Energy Technicians work on installing and servicing renewable energy systems like solar panels and wind turbines. The certifications and work environments overlap, but their specific tasks and industry applications differ.

Job description

About DESRI
DESRI (formerly D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments) is a market-leading owner and operator of renewable energy projects throughout the United States. We have acquired or developed approximately 13 gigawatts of contracted capacity across a portfolio of over 85 renewable energy projects in 24 states.
At DESRI, our culture is grounded in rigorous analytics and thoughtful risk-taking, with a strong emphasis on creativity, intellectual curiosity, and continuous improvement. We operate with lean teams that prioritize efficiency and minimize unnecessary bureaucracy, enabling individuals to take ownership and move quickly. We value open, constructive dialogue and believe it leads to better outcomes. Above all, we are driven to go the extra mile and support one another, fostering a collaborative environment built on accountability, integrity, and care.
About the role
DESRI is seeking a talented and motivated individual to join its Engineering and BESS team as a Manager, with title commensurate with experience. This individual will lead the engineering, design review, integration, and implementation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems across DESRI's portfolio of utility-scale solar, battery energy storage (BESS), and hybrid renewable energy projects. The role provides an opportunity to shape how DESRI's renewable assets are monitored, controlled, and optimized throughout the project lifecycle.
You will collaborate closely with Engineering, Development, Construction, Operations, Asset Management, Information Technology, and external EPC partners to ensure reliable, secure, and scalable SCADA and controls systems that support the safe and efficient operation of DESRI's growing renewable energy fleet.
What you'll do
You will lead or support the execution of SCADA and controls integration for utility-scale battery storage projects, ensuring robust system performance and operational readiness. Responsibilities include conducting detailed SCADA design reviews, defining technical specifications, and supporting EPC scoping and vendor selection for controls and monitoring systems. You'll develop integration strategies to connect battery systems with energy management systems (EMS), plant controllers, and DESRI's central monitoring platform.
You'll create and maintain comprehensive points lists, alarm and data mapping documentation, and tag naming conventions for BESS and related infrastructure. You'll oversee or assist with configuration of alarming, data historian setup, and control logic verification, ensuring alignment with operational requirements and industry best practices. You'll work closely with EPCs and integrators during design, factory acceptance testing (FAT), and site commissioning to verify communication interfaces, system performance, and data accuracy.
You'll support DESRI's operations and commissioning teams by troubleshooting SCADA integration issues, validating telemetry data, and ensuring systems are optimized for performance, reliability, and cybersecurity. You'll contribute to continuous improvement by capturing lessons learned, standardizing SCADA templates, and implementing best practices across DESRI's growing battery storage and renewable energy portfolio.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field is required. A master's degree in engineering, controls, or renewable energy systems is a plus.
  • Candidates must have at least five years of relevant experience in SCADA, controls, or power systems integration.
  • Experience with utility-scale battery energy storage systems is strongly preferred, including familiarity with energy management systems (EMS), battery management systems (BMS), power conversion systems (PCS), and plant controllers. Proficiency in developing or managing points lists, alarm configurations, and data mapping between systems is required.
  • Candidates should have strong knowledge of SCADA architectures, industrial communication protocols, data management, and system testing/commissioning practices. Familiarity with NERC/CIP, cybersecurity, and utility telemetry requirements is a plus. Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills are essential, along with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Occasional travel to project sites and vendor facilities will be required for design reviews, testing, and commissioning support.
  • The expected annual base salary for this position is $150,000 - $170,000, commensurate with experience. Our compensation and benefits package includes variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage.
