Job description

Job Summary
To provide positive and reliable interaction with the young men that participates in the Midnight Sports League. Also, to help create a positive environment where the players demonstrate sportsmanship, fundamental skills, teamwork and responsibility.
Position Summary
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the Part-Time Employee Manual.
  • Enforce all Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation policies and rules.
  • A working knowledge of the Late Night Sports League policies, procedures, programs, and services.
  • Coaches are responsible for all duties related to their respective teams.
  • Coaches will be responsible for contacting their players to give league updates, game times washing and maintaining uniforms and enrichment/mentoring programming.
  • Coaches may be asked to meet with their players one-on-one for personal sessions.
  • Coaches may be asked to provide an enrichment session based on their profession, business, or skill set in that area to contribute to the Enrichment schedule for Wednesdays.
  • Communicate effectively with participants/patrons and staff.
  • Remain alert, free of distractions and diffuse situations before they escalate.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervision Required
Works under the direction of the Recreation Supervisors.
Job Requirements
  • Complete and clear a criminal background check.
  • Regular attendance at scheduled games, meetings and enrichment/mentor sessions.
  • Communicate league information to players.
  • Ensure the entire team participates in mandatory Enrichment (Tuesdays)/Mentor sessions (Thursdays).
  • Notify the League Manager immediately in case of an emergency where you are unable to coach.
  • Coaches are required to arrive 15 minutes prior to scheduled game(s).
  • Be accessible by phone and email.
  • Abide by all league rules and officials decisions.

Preferred Experience
  • Have a strong desire to work and mentor young men in the community.
  • Be at least 26 years old and have a high school diploma.
  • Previous professional experience facilitating small group activities and/or workshops.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Ability to effectively communicate with participants, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to foster positive working relationships.
  • Ability to relate to and empathize with participants issues and deescalate conflicts.
  • Excellent decision making skills and ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to delegate job duties as needed.

Working Environment
This environment includes walking, standing for long periods of time, and possible loud noises when exposed to activities in the gym or similar environment. Staff will be required to supervise groups of young adults as well as assist in the accommodation of children and/or adults with disabilities (within parameters of provided training).
