What is a part time attorney?

A part time attorney is a licensed lawyer who works fewer hours than a full-time attorney, often with a flexible schedule. They may handle specific cases, work on a contract basis, or provide legal services to clients while balancing other commitments. Part time attorneys can work for law firms, corporations, government agencies, or as solo practitioners. This arrangement is ideal for those seeking work-life balance or pursuing other interests alongside their legal career.

How do part time attorneys typically balance client expectations with reduced hours?

Part-time attorneys often manage client expectations by clearly communicating their availability and setting realistic timelines for deliverables. They may prioritize tasks, delegate certain responsibilities, and utilize technology to stay organized and responsive. Collaboration with full-time colleagues is common, ensuring that client matters progress smoothly even when the part-time attorney is not in the office. This structure allows for effective workload management while maintaining high-quality legal service.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part time attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, state bar admission, and strong legal research and writing skills. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis and case management software is often necessary. Excellent time management, communication, and client-relations skills help maximize productivity in a flexible or reduced-hour schedule. These abilities ensure effective legal representation, compliance with professional standards, and the ability to deliver quality service despite limited hours.

Prospect Research

  • Research prospective individual, corporate, and foundation donors.
  • Prepare donor and prospect profiles for cultivation meetings.
  • Assist with identifying new funding opportunities aligned with CDEL's mission.
  • Support donor pipeline development and moves management.

Donor Database & Stewardship

  • Maintain accurate donor records and gift documentation.
  • Assist with gift acknowledgments and stewardship communications.
  • Generate reports and mailing lists from the donor database.
  • Support donor recognition and stewardship activities.

Development Operations

  • Assist with the preparation of fundraising materials, presentations, and donor communications.
  • Provide operational support for fundraising campaigns and special events.
  • Perform other development-related projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • Experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, grants administration, donor relations or a related field preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong research and analytical abilities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities independently while meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a hybrid work environment.
  • Commitment to CDEL's mission of expanding access to justice for older adults and persons with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience researching foundations, corporations, and major gift prospects.
  • Familiarity with grant writing, grants administration, and grant reporting.
  • Experience supporting fundraising campaigns, donor stewardship, or special events.
  • Experience using donor relationship management (CRM) systems, with Bloomerang experience preferred.
  • Experience using grant research and management platforms, with Grantseeker experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize competing deadlines, and work independently in a collaborative nonprofit environment.

Compensation & Schedule

  • Part-time position averaging 10–15 hours per week (approximately 40–60 hours per month).
  • Hybrid work environment with flexible scheduling and the opportunity to work remotely for much of the position.
  • $25–$35 per hour, commensurate with experience.

About the organization

The Center for Disability & Elder Law (CDEL) is a dynamic 501(c)(3) legal aid organization dedicated to empowering low-income older adults and persons with disabilities in Chicago and Cook County through pro bono legal assistance.
