The School of Nursing at the University of Southern Maine invites applications to a Part-time Faculty position in the online Accelerated Nursing Program.
We are seeking instructor to teach the following courses:
Healthcare Informatics & AI Literacy in Nursing - This course prepares students to critically engage with healthcare informatics, digital health technologies, and artificial intelligence as essential components of contemporary nursing practice. Emphasis is placed on data literacy, ethical use of technology, clinical decision support, interoperability, privacy and security, and the nurse's leadership role in digital transformation. Students analyze real-world applications of informatics and AI across care settings and develop skills to evaluate, select, and advocate for technologies that support person-centered, equitable, and safe care.
Quality Improvement and Patient Safety - This course prepares RN-BSN students to apply quality improvement (QI) and patient safety principles to enhance care processes and outcomes across healthcare settings. Students examine improvement science, safety culture, high-reliability practices, human factors, and measurement strategies used to identify gaps in care and reduce harm. Learners use practical tools (e.g., PDSA cycles, process mapping, root cause analysis, and prospective risk assessment) to design data-informed improvement approaches that are ethical, equitable, and feasible within real-world nursing workflows. Emphasis is placed on interprofessional collaboration, transparent communication, and professional accountability in sustaining safer systems of care.
Health Policy and Advocacy - This course examines the role of professional nurses in shaping health policy and engaging in advocacy to improve healthcare delivery, access, and equity. RN-BSN students analyze how policy, ethics, and economic forces influence healthcare systems and patient outcomes at local, state, national, and global levels. Emphasis is placed on developing policy literacy, ethical reasoning, and advocacy strategies that enable nurses to influence health policy and systems change. The course prepares nurses to participate as informed advocates and leaders in advancing equitable, person-centered healthcare.
Population Health, Community & Global Perspectives - This course examines population health from local, national, and global perspectives, emphasizing the professional nurse's role in promoting health equity and addressing social, structural, and environmental determinants of health. RN-BSN students analyze community and population-level data, assess health disparities, and explore evidence-informed strategies for disease prevention, health promotion, and policy advocacy. The course prepares nurses to collaborate with communities and interprofessional partners to improve population health outcomes across diverse settings.
Leadership, Systems Thinking and Care Coordination (NUR 474) - This course provides the RN student with an overview of the theoretical frameworks of leadership and management roles in nursing with a focus on organizational analysis, integration of decision-making, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. It will facilitate investigation of leadership and change theories, conflict management, and quality improvement in the delivery of healthcare services.
Chronic Illness Care - In this course, learners will explore the effect of chronic illness on individuals, families, healthcare professionals, and healthcare systems. Students will assess and propose evidence-based medical and self-management chronic illness care strategies.
Key job responsibilities include delivering content to meet pre-determined course objectives, grading and evaluating assignments and managing the course via our learning management system, Brightspace.
Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience, as determined by the Part-Time Faculty Association of Maine (PATFA), an affiliate of the national American Federation of Teachers (AFT) union. • BSN or BS in Nursing from an accredited program
• Current active Maine RN license or relevant nursing compact license
• Able to meet employment criteria, including background check, immunizations, BLS/CPR certification, and current TB for clinical teaching
• Expertise in the course subject matter
