JOB TITLE:
Visual Media Editor
JOB PURPOSE:
The Student Visual Media Editor leads the visual storytelling efforts for Student Media by overseeing photography, videography, graphics, page design, and multimedia production across the student newspaper, website, and broadcast platforms. This position ensures that visual content is engaging, accurate, timely, and consistent with Student Media's editorial and branding standards while supervising and mentoring student photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and other visual contributors
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Oversee the visual presentation of all Student Media products, including the newspaper, website, broadcast programming, and social media platforms.
  2. Direct the planning, creation, and publication of photographs, videos, graphics, illustrations, infographics, and other visual content.
  3. Assign, supervise, and mentor photographers, videographers, graphic designers, and other visual media staff.
  4. Coordinate visual coverage of campus news, athletics, features, entertainment, opinion, and special events.
  5. Work closely with editors, reporters, producers, and designers to ensure visual content complements editorial coverage.
  6. Ensure all visual content meets journalistic ethics, copyright requirements, accessibility standards, and Student Media policies.
  7. Review, select and edit photographs, videos, graphics, and layouts for quality, accuracy, technical excellence, and consistency.
  8. Assist with page design, digital presentation, and multimedia storytelling as needed.
  9. Ensure deadlines for visual content are met for print, digital, broadcast, and social media publications.
  10. Train student staff on photography, videography, graphic design, editing software, camera equipment, lighting, and multimedia production techniques.
  11. Assist with recruitment, training, and evaluation of visual media staff.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned in support of Student Media operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Full-time student with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
  2. Experience in photography, videography, graphic design, multimedia production, or visual journalism.
  3. Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud software such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, After Effects, InDesign, or comparable creative software.
  4. Understanding of visual storytelling, composition, design principles, and multimedia production techniques.
  5. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet frequent production deadlines.
  6. Ability to work collaboratively with editors, reporters, producers, designers, and other student staff.
  7. Willingness to train, mentor, and supervise fellow student employees.
  8. Access to a digital camera.
  9. Must be available to start work Aug. 24, 2025
  10. Must be available for publication deadlines on Sundays and Wednesday nights.
  11. Must be available Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for training.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Ability to shoot quality digital photographs in newspaper style
  2. Some prior supervisory experience
