How much do part 91 pilot jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for part 91 pilot in Texas is $121,969.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $93,200.00 and $144,400.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a part 91 pilot?

A Part 91 Pilot operates under FAA regulations in Part 91, which govern non-commercial flights such as private, corporate, and personal aircraft operations. These pilots do not fly for hire, meaning they are typically employed by private owners, businesses, or flight departments rather than airlines or charter companies. Their duties include pre-flight planning, ensuring aircraft readiness, and adhering to safety protocols. Unlike Part 135 or Part 121 pilots, they have more flexibility in flight schedules and operational requirements. However, they must still comply with FAA regulations, including currency and proficiency requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a part 91 pilot?

To thrive as a Part 91 Pilot, you need comprehensive aeronautical knowledge, advanced flight proficiency, and typically an FAA Commercial Pilot Certificate or Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) rating. Mastery of avionics systems, flight management systems, and familiarity with regulatory compliance under FAR Part 91 are essential. Exceptional situational awareness, decision-making skills, and strong interpersonal communication set standout pilots apart. These qualifications ensure safe, efficient, and professional private or corporate flight operations, often with higher expectations for autonomy and customer service.

What are the most common challenges faced by part 91 pilots in their day-to-day operations?

Part 91 Pilots often work with flexible schedules and may be required to adapt quickly to changing itineraries or weather conditions, which can be challenging from a planning perspective. Since these pilots usually fly for private owners or corporate clients, they are expected to handle everything from pre-flight planning and maintenance checks to catering to passenger needs, sometimes as the sole crew member. Balancing the responsibilities of flight safety, regulatory compliance, and exceptional customer service can be demanding but also rewarding. Strong organizational skills, proactivity, and adaptability are key to overcoming these challenges and excelling in the role.

Do Part 91 pilots get paid?

Part 91 pilots are typically paid for their flying services, especially when operating for commercial purposes or on a scheduled basis. However, many private or recreational pilots fly without compensation, as Part 91 primarily governs private, non-commercial operations. Payment depends on the specific flight, employer, and whether the pilot is acting as a commercial or private operator.
