A Part 135 SIC (Second in Command) Pilot is a co-pilot who operates under FAA Part 135 regulations, which govern commuter and on-demand charter operations. SIC pilots assist the Captain (PIC) in flight operations, navigation, and aircraft management while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements. Their duties typically include pre-flight inspections, checklist execution, communication with air traffic control, and supporting overall flight safety. This role serves as a valuable step for pilots building experience toward a Captain position.
To succeed as a Part 135 SIC Pilot, you need a commercial pilot certificate with instrument rating, strong knowledge of Part 135 regulations, and excellent aeronautical decision-making skills. Familiarity with common avionics systems, flight planning software, and company-specific operational procedures is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills in this role. Mastering these skills ensures safe, efficient operations and seamless collaboration with captains and flight teams in demanding environments.
Part 135 SIC Pilots often work variable schedules, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the company's operations and customer demand. Duty rotations can range from single-day flights to multi-day trips, and pilots must be prepared for short-notice assignments or changes due to weather or operational needs. Some employers use rotating schedules or on-call periods, which provide flexibility but may require quick adaptability. Pilots usually fly with a consistent crew or captain, fostering close teamwork in dynamic environments. It's important to clarify specific scheduling practices with each employer, as these can vary widely among operators.
