SUMMARY:
The eCommerce Project Engineer supports and executes parcel automation initiatives across the DHL eCommerce network. This role focuses on project execution, data-driven analysis, automation system support, reporting, and layout development for parcel sorting and material handling systems.
The Project Engineer will support multiple strategic and tactical projects related to parcel sorters, automation safety, robotics, computer vision, and machine moves, working closely with Operations, Engineering, Network Design, and external vendors. While not the overall owner of large programs, this role is expected to independently manage defined project scopes or workstreams and deliver results in alignment with cost, schedule, safety, and performance targets.
The position is based in a Distribution Center and supports network-wide automation initiatives across multiple sites.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Parcel Sorter & Automation Initiatives
    • Support and execute parcel sorter initiatives, including upgrades, retrofits, and new installations.
    • Support automation systems related to scanning, weighing, dimensioning, conveying, tilters, dumpers, and other MHE.
    • Support automation safety initiatives, including design reviews, documentation, compliance tracking, and field coordination.
    • Support machine moves, re-layouts, and equipment relocations across the DC network.
  • Project Management
    • Independently manage defined project scopes or workstreams within larger automation programs.
    • Coordinate project schedules, action items, and milestone tracking.
    • Interface with Operations, IT, vendors, and Engineering to support execution and issue resolution.
    • Support robotics initiatives where needed, including:
    • Stationary robotics (robotic arms)
    • Mobile robotics (AMRs / AGVs)
  • Project Reporting & Business Case Support
    • Prepare and maintain project reporting, including status updates, timelines, risks, and issue logs.
    • Support Business Case Analysis (BCA) activities:
    • Data collection and validation
    • CapEx and benefit input
    • Payback and ROI support
    • Track project costs and support budget adherence for assigned initiatives.
  • Technology, Innovation & Digital Enablement
    • Support computer vision and AI-related automation initiatives, including pilots and trials.
    • Assist in identifying, evaluating, and deploying new automation technologies in collaboration with Network Design and Engineering.
    • Support transition from design through pilot and implementation phases.
  • Layouts, Documentation & Training
    • Develop and maintain CAD machine layouts (AutoCAD) for new and modified automation systems.
    • Support development of SOPs, work instructions, and technical documentation.
    • Support training, commissioning, and go-live activities at DC sites.
  • Continuous Improvement
    • Identify and support continuous improvement opportunities related to throughput, safety, quality, and efficiency.
    • Support structured problem-solving initiatives using data and basic statistical tools.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree required. Industrial, System Engineering or Mechanical Engineering is preferred.
  • 2 years of work experience required, 3 + years preferred.
  • Experience in statistical methods, e.g. Control charts, Pareto principle, is a plus.

REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS:
  • Willingness to travel up to 35% or as needed.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, working knowledge in AutoCAD, Visio and MS Project.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong project management skills in development, coordination and management of project plans.
  • Experience in parcel sorting automation, automation design and implementation is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to develop relationships across all levels in organization.
  • Change management experience is a plus.
