Job description

Paramedic

Responds to emergency and non-emergency medical calls, disasters, multi-casualty situations, fires and/or all other types of emergencies, to treat illnesses and injuries of adult and pediatric patients, often under stressful and hazardous conditions, while operating under a complex system of standing orders.

Operates emergency vehicle to and from the scene to facilitate the transport of sick and injured patients to the appropriate facility, in a safe, efficient, and effective manner.

Evaluates the incident scene upon arrival and identifies dangerous conditions and hazards in order to ensure the safety of the crew and patient(s).

Conducts thorough patient assessment and examination; triages patients accordingly; initiates the appropriate medical care; and evaluates the need for additional resources.

Initiates basic and advanced life support procedures corresponding to Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) guidelines.

Administers approved drugs per patient care protocol within Paramedic's scope of practice.

Assesses treatment effects; relays and communicates patient's condition and complete medical information to emergency medical dispatch, hospitals and physicians via radio and telephone; and provides emergency and non-emergency transport of sick or injured persons as necessary.

Assists fire rescue personnel with various types of rescue operations.

Directs basic, intermediate and advanced Emergency Medical Technicians and DeKalb County Fire Rescue recruits during clinical rides while in training, in any and all aspects of patient care where the Paramedic is ultimately responsible.

Completes and prepares a variety of forms, logs, records, reports and other documentation associated with responsibilities of the position; and maintains administrative records and files.

Maintains ambulance inventory through regular checks to ensure adequate supplies aboard vehicle, including supplies in drug and IV boxes; ensures security of drug box, inventory, and records; and transports bio-hazardous waste to the emergency rooms for disposal.

Performs daily checks and scheduled inspections to ensure proper functioning of communications equipment, medical equipment, and vehicles.

Maintains current certifications as required by attending re-certification and required trainings.

High school diploma or GED required and one year experience as a Paramedic preferred.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License. Must possess and maintain current Paramedic licensure with the Georgia Department of Public Health Office of EMS and Trauma. Must be certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
