What is a paralegal?

Paralegals are professionals who assist lawyers with legal work, but they are not qualified to practice law themselves. Their duties often include conducting legal research, drafting documents, organizing files, and helping attorneys prepare for trials, hearings, and meetings. Paralegals play a crucial role in law firms, corporations, and government agencies by ensuring legal processes run smoothly and efficiently. While they perform many tasks similar to lawyers, paralegals cannot give legal advice or represent clients in court.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Paralegal, you need strong legal research, writing, and organizational skills, typically supported by a paralegal certificate or relevant degree. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in document management systems are essential technical requirements. Attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to multitask under deadlines are standout soft skills for this position. These competencies ensure accurate legal support, efficient case preparation, and smooth workflow within legal teams.

What are some common challenges paralegals face when managing multiple cases simultaneously?

Paralegals often juggle several cases at once, which can present challenges in prioritization, organization, and meeting tight deadlines. Staying on top of case files, court dates, and attorney requests requires strong time-management skills and attention to detail. Many paralegals use specialized legal software and checklists to track tasks and ensure nothing is overlooked. Collaborating closely with attorneys and other support staff also helps distribute the workload and maintain smooth case progression.

What is the difference between Paralegal vs Legal Assistant?

AspectParalegalLegal Assistant
CredentialsOften requires a paralegal certificate or associate degreeMay have similar education, but less formal certification often acceptable
Work EnvironmentWorks closely with attorneys on case preparation, legal research, and document draftingSupports attorneys with administrative tasks, client communication, and document management
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly employed in law firms, corporate legal departments, government agenciesFound in similar settings, often overlapping roles in law offices

While both roles support legal professionals, paralegals typically handle more substantive legal work like research and document preparation, whereas legal assistants focus more on administrative support. The roles often overlap, but understanding these distinctions helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

Is it hard to be hired as a paralegal?

Becoming a paralegal can be competitive, as many employers seek candidates with relevant education, such as a paralegal certificate or degree, and strong organizational skills. Gaining experience through internships or entry-level positions can improve job prospects, but the hiring process often depends on the local job market and the candidate's qualifications. Overall, persistence and relevant skills are important for securing a paralegal position.

What salary do paralegals make?

Paralegals typically earn a median annual salary of around $56,000, with salaries ranging from approximately $40,000 to $75,000 depending on experience, location, and employer. Those with specialized skills or certifications, such as in legal research or document management, may earn higher wages.

Job description

Paralegal, Family Law (In-Person)

Hughes Law Group | New Port Richey, FL

Full-Time | Monday through Friday | In-person | Benefits: health insurance, retirement, paid time off | Pay: $45,000 to $70,000 per year

OVERVIEW

Hughes Law Group is adding a paralegal to our family law team, working directly with attorneys on active cases. This is a second paralegal seat rather than a vacancy, so you arrive to a desk with an established paralegal beside you and an office administrator who has supported the practice since 2013.

The caseload is marital and family law throughout Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Hernando counties. Files range from uncontested dissolutions that close quickly through matters involving closely held businesses, business valuations, and contested parenting and timesharing disputes.

RESPONSIBILITIES

โ€ข Draft pleadings and correspondence, and organize exhibits

โ€ข Assist with parenting plans and marital settlement agreements

โ€ข Prepare cases for depositions, mediations, hearings, and trial

โ€ข Manage discovery and case preparation

โ€ข Maintain organized files and calendars, and hold the deadlines

โ€ข Support the billing process and account for your time

REQUIREMENTS

โ€ข One year or more in a law office, with family law preferred

โ€ข Clear writing, and sound judgment with confidential matters

โ€ข Billing experience, and the time management to hold deadlines across several active files at once

โ€ข A professional manner with judicial assistants, clients, and opposing firm.

HELPFUL

โ€ข Familiarity with Clio, Word, Excel, and Outlook

โ€ข Experience preparing financial affidavits in Family Law Software

โ€ข A Florida notary commission

โ€ข Prior work in the Pasco, Hillsborough, or Pinellas family divisions

EDUCATION

An associate or bachelor's degree, a paralegal certificate, or Florida Registered Paralegal designation.

ABOUT THE FIRM

Hughes Law Group has practiced marital and family law in New Port Richey for decades. Allyson Hughes has been Board Certified in Marital and Family Law by The Florida Bar since 1998 and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. The firm handles one area of law, which means the work you learn here compounds. Note that his position is on site, in the office.
