What is paper tutoring?

Paper Tutoring is an online educational platform that provides students with 24/7 access to live tutors who can assist with homework help, essay review, and study support across a variety of subjects. The service is typically offered through schools or school districts, allowing students to connect with qualified tutors at no additional cost to their families. Tutors on Paper guide students through problem-solving rather than giving direct answers, helping to foster understanding and independent learning skills. The platform also offers features like asynchronous essay feedback and a chat-based interface for real-time help.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a paper tutor?

To thrive as a Paper Tutor, you need strong subject matter expertise, a solid academic background, and experience in educational support or tutoring. Familiarity with online learning platforms, digital communication tools, and sometimes specific certifications in education or tutoring is beneficial. Exceptional communication, patience, and the ability to personalize learning approaches make a tutor stand out in this role. These skills are crucial for effectively guiding students, building their confidence, and fostering academic growth in a virtual environment.

What are some common challenges faced by paper tutors when supporting students online, and how can they be overcome?

Paper Tutors often encounter challenges such as engaging students who may be hesitant to participate, effectively communicating complex concepts virtually, and managing multiple student inquiries at once. Additionally, strong organizational skills and collaboration with fellow tutors or supervisors help ensure timely and effective support for all students.

Job description

About Paper
Paper is reimagining how schools support students so that every learner can reach their full potential. Our vision is a world where every student receives timely, personalized, and relevant academic support. We offer a suite of scalable solutions including 24/7 tutoring, writing feedback, math practice, and AI-powered instructional tools that provide personalized support to all students, including multilingual learners. Our GROW high-impact tutoring program accelerates learning through targeted small-group instruction, delivers measurable gains in student achievement, and eases teacher workloads. Trusted by 500+ school districts across 40+ states and backed by leading investors including IVP, Sapphire Ventures, Framework Capital, and Reach Capital, we're pursuing a bold goal: to drive the best academic outcomes for as many students as possible.
About the role
Join our team and make a lasting impact on students' academic journeys.
As a GROW Tutor at Paper, you will deliver high-impact, relationship-based tutoring in small groups or one-on-one, supporting students in Math and/or ELA. For a typical program, you will meet with the same students 2-3 times per week for 30-45 minute sessions over 8-12 week programs, helping them build confidence, critical thinking skills, and academic mastery.
This role is fully remote and offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference while developing your professional skills as an educator.
What you'll do
  • Lead live, video-based tutoring sessions (small groups of 2-4 students or 1:1) in Math and/or ELA
  • Prepare for each session using provided lesson plans and materials
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment
  • Build rapport with students and encourage active participation
  • Adapt instruction to varying student abilities, learning styles, and needs
  • Administer ongoing informal assessments and adjust support accordingly
  • Deliver consistent, high-quality tutoring aligned with curriculum standards
  • Acknowledge and implement feedback from quality assurance observations
  • Collaborate with the team and communicate proactively via Slack
  • Respond to emergency sub requests when available
  • Accept a minimum of 3 GROW programs by a mid-semester deadline
    • We recommend applying to at least 10 programs per academic semester to ensure placement of 3 programs
  • GROW programs will be available for ELA as well as Math. To support the range of student needs in GROW, tutors will be expected to tutor both Math and ELA up to grade 5. For the grade 6-12 level, tutors must be able to support at least one subject (Math or ELA).

Qualifications
  • Ability to tutor Math and ELA for elementary students (Grades 3-5)
  • Ability to tutor at least one subject for middle and high school students (Grades 6-12)
  • Strong verbal communication skills and comfort facilitating live virtual sessions
  • Proven ability to engage students and build rapport
  • Strong time management, organizational skills, and reliability
  • Adaptability to diverse student learning styles and needs
  • Tech readiness: stable internet, webcam, microphone, and distraction-free workspace
  • Willingness to receive feedback and engage in continuous improvement
  • Applicants must reside in one of the following states to be eligible: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia, or Wisconsin.

Preferred Experience
  • 2+ years of experience in education or tutoring
  • Experience working with students in Grades 3 and above
  • Degree in a relevant field
  • Experience with technology-enabled or remote instruction

Schedule and Compensation
  • GROW tutoring: $23.50/hour
  • Training & Onboarding: $20.50/hour
  • Tutors must maintain consistent weekly availability for scheduled GROW sessions throughout the program
  • Part-time hours may vary based on program needs

Why Join Paper?
  • Make an Impact: Help students achieve academic growth through high-impact tutoring
  • Professional Growth: Develop instructional and communication skills with ongoing support
  • Flexible Work: Fully remote, with structured recurring scheduling for program sessions
  • Collaborative Environment: Work with a mission-driven and supportive team
  • Equity-Focused: Contribute to equitable access to academic support for all students

What is it like to work at Paper? You will:
  • Be joining a remote-first company with a collaborative, mission-driven culture working together to write the next chapter of Paper!
  • Be part of an exciting new era of growth, with fresh leadership, a bold product vision, and a redefined charter.
  • Thrive in a fast-moving, build-from-scratch environment where agility and critical thinking guide decisions, collaboration is built on trust and healthy challenge, and every team member takes ownership to deliver real customer impact and grow every day.

Additional Benefits:
  • Comprehensive and competitive compensation, access to Paper's Employee and Family Assistance Program, unlimited on-demand tutoring and educational support for the children of Paper employees, and more!

You'll be joining a team of mission-driven builders who care deeply about equity in education, and who thrive in a culture of ownership, velocity, and continuous learning. If you're energized by challenges, inspired by impact, and ready to help lead a high-growth business through its next phase, we'd love to meet you.
We believe diverse teams build better products and we are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
