Job description

JOB SUMMARY

An Industrial Painter / Blaster is responsible for the preparation and painting of a variety of industrial structures. They work on-site, applying coatings to steelwork, pipelines, storage tanks, and other surfaces to prevent corrosion, improve durability, and enhance appearance. Their duties include cleaning and preparing surfaces, selecting, and mixing paint, ensuring proper safety measures are followed, and maintaining equipment. They may also be required to work at heights, operate spray equipment, and work in confined spaces. A skilled Industrial Painter will have knowledge of different application techniques and be able to work efficiently and effectively to produce high-quality finishes.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Subject to but not limited to do.)

  • Read and interpret paint specifications, manufacturer application instructions, and related MSDS sheets.
  • Surface Preparation by means of solvent cleaning, hand tool cleaning, power tool cleaning, & abrasive blasting.
  • Application of coatings by using various techniques such as brush and roll striping, conventional (air pressure pot) and airless spraying.
  • Can apply zinc, epoxy, enamel, or other types of surface coatings.
  • Familiar with Steel Structural Painting Chemical (SSPC) preparation and how they apply to surface coating documentation to NACE standards.
  • Basic knowledge of paint flow, distance, wet mil thickness testing, and technical proficiency with the ability to apply even coats of paint while controlling the thickness is required.
  • Can troubleshoot blasting and painting equipment and read wet or dry gauges.
  • Operate, maintain, and clean all equipment, paint, ventilation, compressed air, blast, and PPE; related to the application of sprayed, rolled, and brushed products in the shop environment.
  • Agitating and reducing paint
  • Paint Booth Station shut down: Cleaning the ceiling, walls, booth blanket and filter maintenance, and sweeping.
  • Viscosity checks
  • Inspect and inventory all parts before beginning task and make sure they have been signed off on by quality.
  • Responsible for notifying Shop Foreman of any problems or discrepancies with shop drawings, paint specs, etc.
  • Responsible for moving finished and unfinished pieces in and out of the paint area.
  • Prepare parts for various department processes. (Sandblasting, paint, etc.)
  • Apply paint to specifications, sandblast, or perform other processes needed.
  • Stage and Tag all parts in one area for the next process.
  • Coordinate with shipping and receiving of large items that need to be moved, staging instructions, paint processing times, and any other instructions needed.
  • Schedule with quality when job is completed for inspection.
  • Coordinate with Shop Forman the most efficient schedule for week’s workload. (prep time, space needed for job, cure time, weather factors, etc.)
  • Keeps work area clean, neat and orderly to ensure a safe and efficient workplace.
  • Must be able to operate safety equipment and use safe work habits while performing the job function.
  • Responsible for storing, applying, and disposing of hazardous materials according to regulatory standards and company safety guidelines.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time. Continual use of hands, considerable arms, and legs as well as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling materials.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver 50 lbs. without physical restrictions.
  • Must wear appropriate PPE at all times such as safety glasses, welding helmets, hearing protection, gloves and safety toe boots.
  • Able to work in hot and cold environments during summer and winter months.
  • Must be able to drive fork lifts and operate power equipment as needed.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Experience with industrial sandblasting and painting is required, including sandblasters, airless spray guns and conventional pressure pots.
  • Able to comply with all company policies, procedures, and safety requirements.
  • Operate overhead cranes and forklifts.
  • Technical ability to escalate issues through leadership chain when identified.
  • Able to understand and communicate both verbally and in written form in English since instructions, labels and other documents are in English.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Previous experience in steel fabrication or industrial paint preparation.
  • Familiarity with steel types, surface preparation techniques, and various paint coatings.
  • 1-2 years of experience painting in production plant, job, and welding shop preferred. High School/GED diploma preferred but not required
  • Technical or certification preferred but not required
  • Able to work overtime if needed
