As of Jun 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for paint artist in the United States is $129,541.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $127,000.00 and $152,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What jobs will no longer exist in 2030?

Paint Artist roles are unlikely to disappear entirely by 2030, but automation and digital tools may reduce demand for traditional manual painting jobs. Some specialized or manual roles could decline as technology advances, but creative and custom work will still require human skill and artistic judgment.

What jobs make $10,000 a month without a degree?

For a Paint Artist, earning $10,000 a month typically requires building a strong portfolio, gaining high-profile clients, or working in commercial or corporate projects. Many artists supplement income through commissions, teaching workshops, or selling artwork online, but reaching this income level often depends on experience, reputation, and business skills.

What is the 80/20 rule in painting?

For a paint artist, the 80/20 rule suggests that roughly 80% of the visual impact of a painting comes from 20% of the elements, such as focal points or key colors. Focusing on these critical areas can enhance the overall effectiveness of the artwork and improve efficiency during the creative process.

What does a Paint Artist do?

A Paint Artist is responsible for adding color, texture, and detail to various surfaces or digital assets, depending on the industry. In traditional settings, they may hand-paint murals, props, or sets for theater, film, or exhibitions. In digital fields like animation or video games, Paint Artists digitally create textures and surface finishes for 3D models, bringing characters and environments to life. Their work requires a strong understanding of color theory, materials, and artistic techniques to achieve realistic or stylized results.

What are some common challenges a Paint Artist might face when collaborating with other departments in a production pipeline?

As a Paint Artist, one common challenge is ensuring that your work aligns seamlessly with the needs and timelines of departments such as compositing, roto, and 3D. Communication is key, as you often need to clarify requirements or adapt to last-minute changes in client feedback. Managing file versions and maintaining consistency across multiple shots can also be demanding, especially in fast-paced production environments. Being proactive about cross-departmental feedback and having a strong understanding of the overall production workflow can help overcome these challenges.

To thrive as a Paint Artist, you need a solid understanding of color theory, painting techniques, and art fundamentals, often supported by a degree in fine arts or equivalent experience. Familiarity with various painting media, digital art software like Adobe Photoshop or Corel Painter, and proper use of art materials is common. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong self-motivation are standout soft skills for producing unique and high-quality work. These skills are crucial for expressing artistic vision, meeting client expectations, and succeeding in competitive art markets.

What You'll Do

  • Prep, prime, and spray automotive-grade paints on metal, wood, fiberglass, and plastics.
  • Use our Matthews Paint Station to mix and match paints for precise color control and durable finishes.
  • Work on custom, one-of-a-kind projects requiring attention to detail and consistency.
  • Maintain paint equipment and ensure a clean, controlled spray environment, including our 40-foot-long by 16-foot-wide by 18-foot-high custom spray room.
  • Collaborate with designers, fabricators, and project managers to achieve high-quality results.
  • Support other departmentsโ€”fabrication, assembly, or general shop tasksโ€”during lighter paint periods to keep projects moving forward.

What We're Looking For

  • Experience with automotive or industrial spray painting (HVLP, airless, conventional).
  • Strong knowledge of paint mixing, color matching, and surface prep.
  • Familiarity with Matthews Paint systems is a plus.
  • Ability to work with multiple materials and adjust techniques accordingly.
  • Detail-oriented mindsetโ€”our work is highly visual, creative, and precision-driven.
  • A self-starter who is capable of cleaning, maintaining, and organizing their workspace.

  • Ability to meet standard physical requirements of the role, including prolonged standing, lifting, and consistent use of respiratory protective equipment.

Why Join Dillon Works?

  • Creative & Unique Work:

Every project is differentโ€”theme parks, architectural features, museum displays, and more.

  • Hands-On Craftsmanship:

Work alongside a talented team of artisans and fabricators on large-scale, one-of-a-kind builds.

  • Diverse Challenges:

Problem-solving and artistic finishing are central to the work, not just spraying paint.

  • Collaborative Environment:

We work as a team, and everyone pitches in to get the job done.

Competitive Pay & Benefits

  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees.
  • Paid holidays & PTO (2 weeks in the first year, increasing over time).
  • Retirement savings plan with employer matching.
  • Hourly pay: $24โ€“$30 per hour.
