Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for an outpatient PACU position requiring a minimum of 2 years of PACU experience, with BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications, and an active VA or compact RN license.

Details
  • Outpatient PACU setting at a community hospital with 8 OR suites operating 24/7
  • PACU unit has 13 bays: 10 Phase 1 and 3 Phase 2
  • Patient population includes inpatient and outpatient surgical patients across multiple specialties, including pediatric patients age 10+
  • Common cases include total joint arthroplasty, spine, orthopedic sports medicine, general surgery, vascular, plastics, urology, ENT, ECT, and GI endoscopy
  • Phase 1 nurse-to-patient ratio is 2:1; Phase 2 ratio is 3:1
  • Nurses rotate between PreOp, Phase 1, and Phase 2 depending on daily patient needs
  • Float requirement includes PreOp, ECT (preop/intraop/postop), and GI Endoscopy (preop and recovery only)
  • Monday through Friday base schedule, 36 hrs/week; shift lengths are typically 9 or 12 hours with variable start times
  • Unit coverage spans 0530–2100 (PreOp opens at 0530, PACU closes at 2100)
  • Rotating 2nd Call commitment per 6-week period: 3 weekend/holiday shifts and 3 weekday shifts required
  • Weekday call hours: 2100–0530; weekend/holiday call: day shift 0800–2000 or night shift 2000–0800
  • Call is self-scheduled within a structured rotation; agency staff sign up after core and PRN staff
  • Call rotation includes Inova-observed holidays, including the day before and possibly the day after each holiday
  • Epic EMR experience preferred
Requirements
  • Active RN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia or an active multistate compact (NLC) license
  • Current AHA certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and PALS
  • Minimum 2 years of PACU RN experience required
  • Strong perianesthesia background preferred
  • Pediatric patient experience helpful but not required
  • Trauma or critical care experience not required
  • Must be comfortable with variable start times, on-call expectations, and floating across units
Additional Information
  • Provide perianesthesia nursing care to patients in PreOp, Phase 1 PACU, and Phase 2 PACU across a wide range of surgical specialties
  • An ECG exam is administered on Day 2 of orientation — pass/fail with one attempt; failure results in assignment termination with no remediation option
  • A study guide and optional pre-start clinical team study session are provided to help candidates prepare for the ECG exam
  • Scrubs: Maroon OR scrubs required in PACU, ECT, and Endoscopy; Maroon OR attire or Navy Inova scrubs when assigned to PreOp — OR attire is provided on campus
  • Fast-paced environment with a strong teamwork focus
