Job description
Under the direction of the IT Manager and the guidance of the Senior Systems Engineer, the Systems Administrator supports and maintains Lane Transit District's enterprise systems infrastructure. This role focuses on operational reliability; administering server platforms, virtualization environments, storage systems, backup and recovery solutions, and core enterprise services to ensure stable, secure, and efficient system operations in support of 24x7 operations.
The Systems Administrator serves as the primary operational resource with a high degree of hands-on responsibility for monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining systems, executing approved changes, and supporting system lifecycle activities. Work is performed in alignment with architecture, standards, and strategies established by senior IT staff and IT leadership., while this role emphasizes consistent operations, documentation, and continuous improvement. Collaboration with senior staff, other IT teams, and vendors is a core aspect of the position.
This is a union-represented position under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) and the Lane Transit District (LTD).
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Monitor enterprise systems including servers, virtualization platforms, storage, backups, and core services. Respond to alerts and take corrective action to maintain system availability and performance.
- Perform routine system administration tasks including patching, updates, maintenance, and verification of system health.
- Investigate, diagnose, and resolve system issues affecting infrastructure, applications, or users. Triage highly complex or non-standard issues to the Senior Systems Engineer or vendors with clear documentation.
- Serve as escalation resource for system related incidents, working with IT teams and vendors to drive issues to resolution.
- Administer virtualization, storage, and backup and recovery platforms, including routine maintenance, capacity monitoring, and operational testing.
- Support and administer core enterprise services including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy and Hybrid services
- Support identity integration and authentication workflows across on-premises and cloud systems, including Entra ID.
- Administer and support Microsoft 365 services including Productivity and Collaboration, Identify and Access Management, Security and Compliance, Infrastructure and Management, and Backup and Data Protection
- Develop and maintain PowerShell scripts to support system administration tasks, automation, reporting, and operational consistency.
- Maintain, test, and execute backup and recovery processes, and support disaster recovery readiness and exercises.
- Execute approved system changes and configurations following established designs, standards, and change management procedures.
- Participate in system builds, upgrades, migrations, and IT lifecycle tasks
- Coordinate with vendors and track support cases through resolution
- Create and maintain accurate system documentation including configurations, procedures, inventories, and operational runbooks.
- Participate in IT change management processes by preparing change documentation and supporting implementation readiness and back out planning.
- Assist with compliance and security efforts by performing routine checks and implementing remediation actions as directed.
- Analyze system performance trends and recommend operational improvements.
- Administer and support enterprise printing services, including print servers, driver management, queue configuration, and operational troubleshooting.
- Provide Tier 2 operational support for enterprise conference room systems, including Microsoft Teams Rooms and associated hardware systems; troubleshoot incidents, coordinate vendor escalation when required, and maintain conferencing documentation and asset records in alignment with IT standards and change management processes.
- This position does not supervise others.
- Incumbent follows procurement policies and procedures with regard to financial decisions; however, incumbent does not have direct financial authority.
Required Education and Experience
This position requires demonstrated experience administering enterprise systems in a production environment, with the ability to independently perform operational system support, troubleshoot complex issues, and execute approved changes in accordance with established standards and procedures.
Experience:
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Four years of experience performing operational systems administration in a production environment, including server platforms, virtualization, storage, and backup and recovery systems.
- Demonstrated experience administering and supporting core enterprise services including Microsoft Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
- Two years of experience supporting Microsoft 365 Productivity and Collaboration, Identify and Access Management, Security and Compliance, Infrastructure and Management, and Backup and Data Protection Preferred:
- Familiarity with ITIL practices related to incident, problem, and change management.
- Industry certifications or formal training related to systems administration, virtualization, or cloud services, or demonstrated progress toward certification.
- Experience using scripting or automation tools such as PowerShell to support system administration tasks.
- May work in a normal office environment and or remote office as approved. Will sometimes be required to work and or attend meetings or events in public and at all LTD locations.
- General office hours are Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm or as approved.
- Occasional after-hours work may be required to support system maintenance activities, projects, or operational needs.
- Travel within the metropolitan area is required.
- Occasional travel outside of the region may be required.
- Occasional work in datacenter environments, including racking equipment, cabling, and related maintenance activities. Work may occur in loud environments.
- Occasional work at LTD facilities or field locations, including exposure to outdoor conditions as required to support system operations.
