Summary
About the Position: This position is located with the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, Logistics Readiness Center, in Fort Stewart, Georgia.

Duties
Help
  • Identifies, separates, counts, and packs items prepared for shipment to domestic and overseas destinations.
  • Ensures proper packing, preservation, and packaging is accomplished on items to avoid damage or deterioration during shipment.
  • Determines materials, containers, devices/tools, and preservatives needed to prepare standard, delicate, and specialized materials and equipment for shipment.
  • Constructs specialized containers to meet requirements, such as wooden dividers, and cuts down cardboard boxes to meet measurement of items to be shipped.
  • Packs and packages hazardous materials and equipment (to include radioactive items), which require special handling, marking, and placing of placards for identification purposes.
  • Uses a variety of hand tools, machines, and packing materials in the performance of work.
  • Maintains daily logs and activity records with pertinent information.
  • Operates a forklift truck and commercial truck to move, handle, and transport material indoors and outdoors.
  • Receives and edits shipping documents to verify items to be shipped.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs.
  • This position has a requirement to lift 45 lbs or more in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • This position requires the employee to pass and maintain forklift certification and driving test.
  • This position requires the employee to obtain and maintain a hazardous material 8B-F7 Defense Packing and Hazardous Material for Transportation Certification. Certification must be updated every two years.
  • This is a Term position scheduled to last 13 months. A term position may be extended to a maximum of six years depending upon the needs of management.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Packer without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common Packer duties. I can perform packer tasks including 1) following basic instructions for packing standard items; 2) organizing warehouse stock by location; and 3) using basic tools or equipment. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. -Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Work is performed on hard surfaces and involves lifting and moving heavy items. Segregation of items involves standing or sitting for prolonged periods and continuous arm hand movement while handling and packaging material and equipment. Moderate physical effort is used to operate a forklift truck, pallet jack, or motor vehicle.
  • Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily inside of a warehouse, but on occasion (approximately 10% of the time) is completed outdoors in cold, hot, windy, rainy, or snowy environments. Subject to injury when moving or handling materials and equipment, and hazards involved while working in close proximity to moving equipment, such as forklifts, conveyer lines, etc. Exposed to all classes of hazardous material to include radioactive items.

Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition.
  • Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a Term appointment will be appointed/converted into a Term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position.
