Job description

Backyard Farms, located in Madison, ME is a 42-acre greenhouse, that we like to think of as one big backyard garden! Our spacious facility grows tomatoes year-round. We are seeking Packers who ensure that the tomatoes are graded, inspected, packed, labeled and packaged appropriately.
$15.10/hr.
Primary Responsibilities:

  • Sort and weigh tomatoes quickly and accurately by variety and grade
  • Package tomatoes while ensuring proper number of tomatoes/clusters are packed
  • Perform production activities such as inspecting, sorting, packaging, weighing and lifting produce.
  • Report defective product or questionable conditions to manager, team leader or supervisor
  • Maintain the work area and ensure the equipment is clean and in orderly condition
  • A Picker must make quick decisions on what is acceptable fruit quality for our customers
  • Adhere to Backyard Farms (BYF) personal hygiene standards
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
  • High school Diploma or equivalent is preferred
  • Understand and follow basic verbal and written instructions
  • Able to identify color and normal depth perception
  • Ability to work in a group setting
  • Effectively communicate information and respond to questions
  • Possess basic mathematical skills
  • Perform basic visual quality inspections on products
  • Must perform duties in accordance to USDA and General Agricultural Practices (GAP) instructions
  • Must meet or exceed productivity standards
Working Conditions:
  • Greenhouse environment with variable and fluctuating temperatures based on the season, with high temperatures in the summer months
  • Fast paced environment working on and around powered industrial equipment and background noise approaches 70 dcbs.
  • Must be able to work around bees.
  • Will perform repetitive motions, frequent bending, stooping, squatting, pushing and pulling of parts and part containers. Also, pinching, gripping and grasping while utilizing tools.
  • Will be on feet and walking and working on concrete surfaces
  • Fluctuating hours and schedule subject to the crop demands to include working weekends/Holidays when needed.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. (more than 40 lbs. requires a team lift)
  • Must be able to work over 8+ hours per day.
