What is a packaging designer?

Packaging Designers are creative professionals who conceptualize and develop the visual and structural design of product packaging. They work to ensure that packaging not only protects the product but also attracts consumers and communicates brand identity. Their responsibilities often include selecting materials, creating graphics and layouts, and collaborating with marketing and manufacturing teams to ensure functionality and appeal. Packaging Designers must balance aesthetics, cost, sustainability, and practicality in their work.

What does a packaging designer do?

A packaging designer creates physical packaging and graphic designs for various industries such as beauty products, food and beverage items, and toys. Their duties include making renderings in 2D and 3D in collaboration with product development professionals and graphic artists. They often work on the entire project, including the design specs, harmonizing the packaging with brand identity, and final production. Other responsibilities of a packaging designer are to choose the type of materials for the packaging and make modifications to samples before large-scale production. Qualifications for this position vary but typically include a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a relevant field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a packaging designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Packaging Designer, you need a strong background in graphic design, an understanding of materials and manufacturing processes, and typically a degree in design or a related field. Proficiency with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and familiarity with 3D modeling tools are essential. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you develop innovative solutions that meet client needs and brand guidelines. These skills ensure that packaging is both visually appealing and functional, supporting brand identity and product protection.

What are some common challenges packaging designers face when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

Packaging Designers often work closely with marketing, product development, and manufacturing teams, and one common challenge is balancing creative vision with practical constraints such as budget, material limitations, and production timelines. Job description

This position requires activities that are subject to US Export Control Laws and require US Citizenship or Green Card Holder.

As a Product Designer, you will play a key role in the evolution of Paperless Parts, helping us build innovative new products as we aspire to build the best technology platform in manufacturing. You can think in systems, prototype in real code, and partner deeply with engineering, product, and marketing to translate ambiguous customer problems into intuitive, production-ready solutions.

What You'll Do
  • Lead design execution across key areas of the product by triangulating customer workflows, technical capabilities, and product strategy into intuitive, production-ready experiences.
  • Prototype at multiple levels, from high-fidelity mockups to real front-end implementations that enable validation with customers and inform engineering direction.
  • Strengthen collaboration between Design and Engineering by acting as a partner who improves speed, quality, and shared understanding throughout the build process.
  • Design with intention for AI and data-driven features: partner with Product and Engineering to evolve how automation, intelligence, and insights appear within the product, balancing power, clarity, and trust.
  • Participate in user discovery along with Product to learn directly from job shops, manufacturers, and buyers to ensure both new and existing solutions solve real workflow challenges.
  • Collaborate and work closely with Product, Engineering, and Customer teams to deliver high quality work, ensuring customers are successful in solving problems around the delivered features.
  • Partner with Marketing on content marketing design: create graphics, illustrations, and visual assets for blog posts, website, case studies, tradeshow events, email campaigns, and social content.
What We're Looking For
  • 4+ years' experience in Product Design, Design Engineering, or Design Technology roles
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating shipped work, systems thinking, and technical depth
  • Curious, driven problem-solver
  • Strong communication and facilitation skills
  • Comfort working in or alongside modern front-end frameworks (React, design systems, prototyping in code, etc.)
  • Proven experience in one or more of the following:
  • Understanding of modern application architectures
  • B2B or B2C SaaS with a metrics-driven methodology
  • Design systems and component libraries
  • Content, brand, or event/tradeshow design
  • Experience designing user-facing AI or data-driven workflows (LLMs, automation, or intelligent assistance) is a plus; deep ML expertise is not required
  • Experience designing for marketing surfaces (web, brand, and campaign design) preferred but not required
  • Manufacturing industry experience preferred but not required
