Packaging Design Manager information

What does a packaging design manager do?

A Packaging Design Manager oversees the creation and development of packaging for products, ensuring that designs are both visually appealing and functional. They coordinate with marketing, product development, and manufacturing teams to align packaging with brand identity and production requirements. Their responsibilities may include managing a team of designers, overseeing project timelines, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Ultimately, they play a key role in enhancing product shelf appeal and customer experience through innovative packaging solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a packaging design manager?

To thrive as a Packaging Design Manager, you need a strong background in graphic design, materials knowledge, and project management, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in design or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, CAD programs, and familiarity with packaging production processes is essential. Leadership, creativity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for guiding teams and collaborating with stakeholders. These competencies ensure innovative, cost-effective packaging solutions that meet brand objectives and regulatory requirements.

How does a packaging design manager typically collaborate with marketing and production teams during a project?

A Packaging Design Manager works closely with marketing to ensure the design aligns with brand messaging and appeals to the target audience, while also collaborating with production teams to confirm that concepts are feasible for manufacturing and meet regulatory requirements. This role often acts as a bridge, facilitating clear communication between creative and technical departments to ensure timelines, budgets, and quality standards are met. Regular meetings, feedback sessions, and cross-functional reviews are common to keep projects on track and address any challenges quickly.

Innovation is at the heart of who we are. Palermo's takes a forward-thinking, entrepreneurial approach to creating high-quality products that are consistently recognized by both industry and consumers. Our commitment to excellence has made us a leader in private-label frozen pizza and contract manufacturing.

  • Opportunity for growth, influence, and long-term career development

  • Creative collaboration with marketing, product, and innovation teams

Where you'll work...
Located in Milwaukee's Menomonee River Valley, Villa Palermo is a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that adjoins our company headquarters. This position will be at our Milwaukee site 2-3 days per week, with the option to work from home the remainder of the week.
Our high-tech operations include an on-site bakery producing best-in-class crusts, advanced robotic packaging equipment, and a 24-hour shipping and receiving operation. Our creative and marketing teams work closely with product development and operations to bring new ideas and brands to life.
What you'll do...
Combine creative design expertise with project management discipline to bring brand and packaging concepts to life.
You will collaborate closely with the Creative Director and cross-functional partners to execute creative projects that support product launches, marketing campaigns, and brand development.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Designing and producing packaging, print, and digital assets that support Palermo's portfolio of brands

What you bring...
  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, marketing, or a related field preferred

  • Five to seven years of professional design experience in an agency, in-house creative team, or consumer packaged goods environment

  • Strong experience in packaging design and print production preferred

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite and related design tools

  • Experience managing multiple design projects simultaneously

  • Strong communication skills and ability to present design ideas clearly

  • Portfolio demonstrating work across packaging, digital, and marketing channels
