What is an oversize load?

An Oversize Load job involves transporting cargo that exceeds standard legal size or weight limits for roads and highways. Drivers must follow special permits, routing, and safety regulations to ensure the safe transport of large or heavy freight. These jobs often require escort vehicles, specialized trailers, and knowledge of state and federal regulations. Oversize load drivers play a crucial role in moving heavy equipment, construction materials, and other large items efficiently and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the oversize load position?

To thrive as an Oversize Load Truck Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), a strong understanding of route planning for heavy and wide loads, and knowledge of relevant safety regulations. Experience with specialized equipment such as pilot cars, load securement devices, and permitting systems is typically required, along with certifications for transporting oversized freight. Attention to detail, patience, effective communication, and strong problem-solving skills are vital for handling challenging routes and coordinating with escorts and law enforcement. These competencies are crucial to ensure cargo safety, comply with legal requirements, and maintain smooth operations during the transportation of large or unusually shaped loads.

What are some common challenges faced by oversize load truck drivers, and how are they addressed on the job?

Oversize Load Truck Drivers often encounter challenges such as navigating narrow roads, avoiding low bridges, dealing with unpredictable weather, and adhering to complex permitting requirements for each route. To address these issues, drivers work closely with logistics coordinators, pilot car drivers, and local authorities to plan safe and legal travel paths. Additionally, they must conduct thorough inspections and secure their loads properly to prevent incidents on the road. Ongoing communication and adaptability are key, as routes and conditions can change unexpectedly, and teamwork ensures the safety of both the cargo and fellow motorists.

Job description

Heavy Haul & Over-dimensional Load Dispatcher / Project Coordinator

Stream Logistics is hiring an experienced Heavy Haul & Oversize Load Dispatcher / Project Coordinator to join our rapidly growing Mission Critical transportation team.

This position requires direct Heavy Haul / OD/OW transportation experience, extensive knowledge of specialized Heavy Haul equipment and trailer types, and a strong working knowledge of the Oversize/Overweight permitting process.

We are looking for someone who has personally coordinated specialized carriers and drivers and understands how shipment dimensions, weight, equipment configuration, permitting, routing and escort requirements come together to successfully execute a Heavy Haul move.

This is not a supply chain analyst, warehouse logistics or procurement position. We are specifically looking for someone with hands-on Heavy Haul transportation experience who can grow into managing complex transportation projects and serving as a primary point of contact for our customers.
What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of direct Heavy Haul, Oversize, Overdimensional or Overweight transportation experience
  • Extensive knowledge of Heavy Haul equipment and specialized trailer types, including flatbeds, step decks, RGNs, lowboys, extendable trailers and multi-axle configurations
  • Strong working knowledge of OD/OW permitting, routing, pilot cars and escort requirements
  • Ability to evaluate load dimensions, weight and axle configurations to determine appropriate equipment and transportation requirements
  • Direct experience coordinating specialized carriers, dispatchers, owner operators and drivers while managing multiple shipments and changing schedules
  • Strong customer communication, organization and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently, take ownership and think ahead

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Plan and coordinate Heavy Haul and OD/OW shipments from initial planning through final delivery
  • Determine equipment and transportation requirements based on load dimensions, weight, routing and project requirements
  • Source and coordinate specialized carriers, negotiate rates, and manage drivers and schedules throughout execution
  • Coordinate permits, routing, pilot cars, escorts and other requirements associated with OD/OW moves
  • Coordinate deliveries with customers, jobsites and project teams around staging, cranes, site access and construction schedules
  • Manage multiple shipments, proactively communicate project status, anticipate issues and take ownership of resolving problems before they impact the project

As you grow in the role, you'll have the opportunity to take ownership of larger Mission Critical transportation projects and serve as the primary transportation point of contact for our customers.
