We are seeking a passionate and mission-driven Overnight Safety Monitor to help expand the impact of Shepherd’s House Ministries across all sites and advance this life-changing work.
The Overnight Safety Monitor is responsible for protecting and enhancing the safety, security, and integrity of The Lighthouse Navigation Center, with a primary focus on overnight participants. Under the supervision of the Overnight Supervisor, this role provides overnight support to shelter guests, conducts routine patrols of the facility and surrounding area, addresses safety concerns, and collaborates with staff and community partners to manage security issues. This position operates in alignment with Shepherd’s House Ministries’ mission, fostering a safe, respectful, and healing environment for participants, staff, and neighbors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Maintain a welcoming, safe environment for participants accessing services and support.
- Monitor the facility and surrounding area through routine patrols; identify and respond to safety concerns, including contacting staff or emergency services as needed.
- Conduct routine facility checks, including securing entrances/exits and monitoring access points to ensure overnight safety and security.
- Prepare the facility for overnight operations and ensure appropriate transition for daytime activities.
- Respond to medical, behavioral, and facility emergencies in accordance with established protocols.
- Identify and address prohibited items or unsafe materials in alignment with Lighthouse policies and procedures.
- Engage participants respectfully using trauma-informed and de-escalation practices to maintain a calm and safe environment.
- Enforce program guidelines and safety standards, including Relational Agreements and Good Neighbor expectations.
- Maintain accurate documentation, including incident reports, shift updates, and communication with staff and security partners.
- Support overall operations through administrative tasks, staff communication, neighborhood relations, and front desk coverage as needed.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education or training in social services, security, or a related field is a plus.
- Previous experience in a similar role, preferably in a shelter or social service setting.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a diverse community.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care and de-escalation techniques.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry.
- Must successfully pass and maintain an acceptable background check(s) in accordance with Shepherd’s House Ministries and applicable laws.
Physical/Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in an overnight shelter environment with both indoor and outdoor responsibilities, including patrols in varying weather conditions.
- Schedule includes overnight shifts, with potential for evenings, weekends, holidays, and variable hours based on operational needs.
- Requires extended periods of standing, walking, and active patrol, with the ability to navigate indoor and outdoor environments, including stairs and uneven surfaces.
- Frequent interaction with individuals experiencing homelessness, trauma, mental health challenges, and substance use in a low-barrier, high-acuity setting.
- Work environment may involve crisis situations, behavioral disruptions, exposure to biohazards, and emotionally intense interactions; requires calm, professional, and responsive behavior.
- Requires physical and mental readiness to respond quickly to emergencies, including the ability to lift up to 25–50 lbs., maintain situational awareness, and effectively communicate using basic technology and documentation systems.
