Job description

About Us
Welcome to United Utility Services, a dynamic player in the electric utility industry. As a trailblazer, we provide comprehensive and innovative offerings that bolster power infrastructure investments across the U.S. We proudly serve as the parent company to industry-leading utility service contractors specializing in transmission, substation, distribution, and grid hardening projects. Our Core Values are clear and simple: Safety, Quality, Integrity, and Professionalism. At United Utility Services, we craft power delivery solutions - built safe, engineered smart, and driven by what customers demand - fueling communities with reliable energy. We are the best-in-class, trusted partner delivering customer-centric Power Delivery Construction and Engineering solutions.
About The Role
We are seeking a skilled and experienced UAS Pilot to join our team in the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) industry. As a UAS Pilot, you will play a crucial role in providing ground and aerial field survey support to our Design, Permitting, and Construction Technicians, as well as other departments, to ensure exceptional service to our clients. This position will require frequent travel and overnight stays at project sites, in which all expenses will be paid by United Utility. A clean driving record is essential. Under the direct supervision of the Field Survey Supervisor, you will be responsible for collecting valuable data from distribution power lines, poles, and related equipment using both handheld ground cameras and aerial sensors equipped with thermal and standard photogrammetry capabilities. The data you capture, including pole framing, attachments, conductor sizes, and other equipment details, will be utilized by our mapping and Design Technicians to ensure accurate visual representation and analysis. In addition to your primary responsibilities, you will have the opportunity to receive training in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Utility locating procedures. We also encourage you to pursue Thermography Level 1 certification for Infrared (IR) analysis and condition assessments, expanding your skill set and enhancing your professional development within the field.
Key Responsibilities
* Pre-flight Planning: Conduct thorough pre-flight planning, including reviewing project requirements, assessing weather conditions, identifying potential hazards, and developing a flight plan that ensures safe and efficient data collection.
* UAS Operation: Safely operate unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to capture visual and thermal data of T&D poles. This includes following all regulatory guidelines and best practices, maintaining control over the UAS during flight, and monitoring equipment performance.
* Data Collection: Utilize UAS-mounted cameras and sensors to collect accurate and high-quality data of T&D poles. This involves capturing images, thermal scans, and LiDAR from various angles and distances to provide detailed visual information for analysis and assessment.
* Inspection and Analysis: Conduct visual inspections of T&D poles using the captured data, identifying any signs of damage, wear, or potential issues. Analyze the data collected, compare it against established standards, and provide detailed reports or recommendations for maintenance or repair.
* Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with safety protocols and regulations throughout the UAS flight operations, mitigating risks associated with flying near power lines, structures, or personnel. Maintain situational awareness and make real-time decisions to prioritize safety during flight.
* Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and inspections of UAS equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability. This includes checking batteries, propellers, cameras, sensors, and any other components critical to flight operations.
* Communication and Collaboration: Effectively communicate with team members, project stakeholders, and other relevant personnel to coordinate flights, share findings, and address any concerns. Collaborate with design, engineering, and maintenance teams to provide insights and support decision-making processes.
* Continued Learning: Stay updated on advancements in UAS technology, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices related to T&D operations. Continuously expand knowledge and skills through training programs, certifications, and professional development opportunities.
Key Qualifications
* Valid FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate
* Minimum of 1 year of experience operating unmanned aerial systems, preferably in the T&D industry.
* Strong knowledge of T&D infrastructure, including power lines, poles, and related equipment.
* Proficiency in operating various UAS platforms and associated software, including flight planning and data analysis tools.
* Familiarity with industry-specific regulations and safety guidelines related to UAS operations in the T&D sector.
* Demonstrated ability to conduct visual and thermal inspections using UAS-mounted cameras and sensors.
* Experience in data collection, analysis, and reporting related to UAS inspections and surveys.
* Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and troubleshoot technical issues during UAS operations.
* Effective communication and teamwork abilities to collaborate with diverse stakeholders as well as work within project teams.
* Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in data collection, reporting, and documentation.
* Proactive problem solver, identifying and resolving technical issues and obstacles that arise in field conditions.
Work Environment:
The UAS pilot / Survey Technician operates in a dynamic work environment that involves extensive fieldwork and effective communication with team members. The nature of the job requires the ability to walk and stand for extended periods while carrying out assigned duties. It is crucial for the UAS pilot to maintain professionalism and composure when handling interactions with potentially difficult customers, ensuring the safety of the crew and adhering to proper procedures. This role will entail traveling long distances to reach assigned work areas, overnight stays in hotel accommodations, and high stress environments.
Equal Opportunity Employer, including disabled and veterans.
