Job description

General Summary:

The Supervisor - Sterile  Processing will oversee technical and non-technical activities of the department. Primary responsibilities include managing staff to ensure daily operations such as cleaning, decontamination, disinfection, assembly, sterilization, and case carts assembly are completed.  The Supervisor will assist in the development and implementation of department policies and procedures and will educate and hold staff accountable to the AAMI standards as well as regulatory rules and guidelines. Department goals and objectives will be developed, deployed and monitored in collaboration with the Sterile  Processing Manager. 

Requirements:

  • Associates degree in business or related area or licensure preferred.
  • CST or CSPT or IAHCSMM-CRCST, or other recognized SPD certification required
  • minimum of three years of experience in Sterile (Sterile) Processing.
  • Effective leadership skills; team-oriented management style; positive communication; experience in process improvement activities. Previous leadership preferred.
  • Proficient writing and verbal skills.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  1. Identifies and maintains functional equipment and assists in the resolution of problems.
  2. Informs SPD staff, surgery ORA (Operating Room Assistant) and OR staff on instrumentation status at daily report.
  3. Maintains and evaluates sterilization and equipment maintenance records.
  4. Performs Sterile processing tasks in the SPD Department including, but not limited to, decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization of instrumentation, and case cart set up.
  5. Assists Manager with staff schedule and helps maintain daily schedule.
  6. Provides assistance in orientation of SPD staff on new systems and special procedures in coordination with the SPD Educator.
  7. Participates in policy development.
  8. Participates in the interviewing and selection process for new department staff.
  9. Evaluates employees' performance.
  10. Troubleshoots and/or repairs surgical equipment and instrumentation as required. Facilitates loaner replacements as necessary and tracks the status of the item.
  11. Maintains a minimum inventory level of both supplies and instruments.
  12. Attends seminars and meetings related to issues pertinent to SPD. Maintains current knowledge of issues by reading and sharing with staff. Is certified or working towards certification with professional organization (AAMI).
  13. Participates in the development of Quality Improvement Plan.
  14. Participates and collaborates in the evaluation of equipment and supplies and participates in recalls when notified by manufacturer or Administration.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.  These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
