What is an overnight robotics software engineer?

Overnight Robotics Software Engineers are professionals who develop, test, and maintain software for robotic systems during overnight shifts. Their work often involves monitoring robot performance, troubleshooting software issues, and deploying updates to ensure seamless operation when most staff are not present. These engineers may support industries like manufacturing, logistics, or warehousing, where robots operate 24/7. Working overnight allows them to address issues in real-time and minimize disruptions to daytime operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an overnight robotics software engineer?

To thrive as an Overnight Robotics Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++, Python, or ROS), a solid background in robotics principles, and typically a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with robotics simulation tools, embedded systems, and version control platforms like Git is commonly required, along with experience in continuous integration systems. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills, especially for solo or remote overnight work. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure reliable system performance, timely troubleshooting, and successful project collaboration during non-standard hours.

What are some unique challenges of working as an overnight robotics software engineer, and how can I prepare for them?

Working overnight as a Robotics Software Engineer often means handling critical updates, maintenance, and troubleshooting during off-peak hours when robots are running autonomously. A major challenge is responding quickly to unexpected issues with limited access to immediate in-person support. To prepare, it's helpful to familiarize yourself with robust remote collaboration tools, develop strong problem-solving skills, and maintain clear documentation for seamless handoffs with daytime teams. Staying organized and practicing proactive communication are key to ensuring smooth operations during overnight shifts.

Job description

About Us
Burro is the leading robotics company in the world by number of robots working outdoors in the field with real customers. Our mission is to free people from tedious work and solve the critical labor shortages faced by farmers and others that work outdoors.

To accomplish our mission, we need a world-class, diverse team where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas. With this in mind, we strive to create a work environment where every employee can be themselves and express their perspective - this enables us to deliver the most creative and innovative solutions to problems our customers face.

Headquartered in Philadelphia with an office in central California, and backed by top Agtech and autonomy investors, including S2G, Cibus, FPrime, Toyota Ventures, FFVC, Xplorer, and Radicle, Burro was created to solve the labor shortages facing farmers using robotics.

We are seeking a Senior Robotics AI Engineer with strong applied machine learning and robotics experience to own and evolve the intelligence behind robot perception and navigation across complex indoor and outdoor sites. This is a hands-on, production focused role where you will design, deploy, optimise and maintain AI systems that directly impact how our robot perceive, reason and move.

The ideal candidate will have a strong grasp of robotics and software engineering fundamentals, along with proven experience in deploying AI accelerated solutions in production environments.
Responsibilities
  • Own the development and productionization of ML systems, including model design, training, fine tuning, optimization, deployment and continuous improvement.
  • Develop and adapt models across multimodal inputs (e.g., camera, LiDAR) and other AI domains as product needs evolve.
  • Integrate ML outputs into the robotics stack, ensuring reliable performance under real-time and hardware constraints.
  • Investigate customer reported issues and drive root-cause analysis to improve system robustness.
  • Build and improve infrastructure for rapid experimentation, model iteration, evaluation and deployment.
  • Improve and scale data collection, labeling, preprocessing and validation pipelines to ensure high-quality training datasets.
  • Implement robust simulation and field testing workflows, along with production monitoring to detect drift and performance degradation.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally  with Product and Engineering to translate requirements into scalable AI solutions.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Robotics, Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in developing software for robotics and machine learning.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and C++.
  • Experience using ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar
  • Proven experience building, deploying and maintaining ML models in production, ideally on edge systems.
  • Hands-on experience working with camera and LiDAR data for perception and navigation tasks.
  • Experience with ML optimization and acceleration tools (e.g., TensorRT), including familiarity with quantization, pruning and other model compression techniques.
  • Strong problem solving mindset and comfort working across system boundaries.
  • Ability to clearly communicate complex advanced concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Continual learning mindset and staying updated with the latest ML research and methodologies.
Nice To Haves
  • MLOps Experience (experiment tracking, dataset versioning)
  • Proficiency in ROS
  • Familiarity with Docker, Linux and production infrastructure environments
Perks
  • Competitive salary and benefits package (medical/dental/vision)
  • Early-Stage Equity
  • 401K Plan
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Paid parental leave
$160,000 - $180,000 a year
