Overnight Robotics Software Engineer information

What is an overnight robotics software engineer?

Overnight Robotics Software Engineers are professionals who develop, test, and maintain software for robotic systems during overnight shifts. Their work often involves monitoring robot performance, troubleshooting software issues, and deploying updates to ensure seamless operation when most staff are not present. These engineers may support industries like manufacturing, logistics, or warehousing, where robots operate 24/7. Working overnight allows them to address issues in real-time and minimize disruptions to daytime operations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an overnight robotics software engineer?

To thrive as an Overnight Robotics Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in C++, Python, or ROS), a solid background in robotics principles, and typically a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with robotics simulation tools, embedded systems, and version control platforms like Git is commonly required, along with experience in continuous integration systems. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills, especially for solo or remote overnight work. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure reliable system performance, timely troubleshooting, and successful project collaboration during non-standard hours.

What are some unique challenges of working as an overnight robotics software engineer, and how can I prepare for them?

Working overnight as a Robotics Software Engineer often means handling critical updates, maintenance, and troubleshooting during off-peak hours when robots are running autonomously. A major challenge is responding quickly to unexpected issues with limited access to immediate in-person support. To prepare, it's helpful to familiarize yourself with robust remote collaboration tools, develop strong problem-solving skills, and maintain clear documentation for seamless handoffs with daytime teams. Staying organized and practicing proactive communication are key to ensuring smooth operations during overnight shifts.

Job description

Job Description

At Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), we are building the next generation of cloud services for autonomous and intelligent robotics.

OCI Robotics Cloud is Oracle's strategic cloud platform for robotics. Our mission is to enable enterprises to seamlessly onboard, manage, monitor, and operate heterogeneous robot fleets through secure, scalable, AI-powered cloud services.

Unlike traditional robotics platforms that focus on individual robots, OCI Robotics Cloud is building the cloud operating system for robotics providing common services for robot identity, registration, fleet management, mission orchestration, telemetry, digital twins, software lifecycle management, and AI-powered automation.

A key part of our vision is an AI-driven, spec-based robot onboarding platform that enables robots from any vendor to integrate rapidly through standardized cloud interfaces, reusable edge services, and AI-generated service contracts.

As Director of OCI Robotics Cloud, you will build both the platform and the organization that will define Oracle's long-term robotics strategy.

This is a rare opportunity to build a greenfield cloud platform with executive visibility and industry-wide impact at the intersection of AI, cloud infrastructure, robotics, and edge computing.

About You

You are a builder.

You enjoy creating organizations, platforms, and engineering cultures from the ground up.

You have successfully led engineering teams building large-scale cloud platforms and understand how to balance long-term technical vision with rapid execution.

You believe great platforms are built around reusable abstractions, developer productivity, and operational excellence.

You are passionate about AI and understand how generative AI can fundamentally improve software engineering, developer experience, and platform automation.

You have a proven track record of hiring, mentoring, and growing exceptional engineering organizations.

You communicate effectively with engineers, architects, product leaders, customers, and executive leadership.

What You'll DoDefine the Platform
  • Define the long-term architecture and technical vision for OCI Robotics Cloud.
  • Build the cloud platform enabling robot registration, identity, fleet management, mission orchestration, telemetry, digital twins, and software lifecycle management.
  • Establish common APIs, service contracts, SDKs, and edge service frameworks that support robots from multiple vendors.
Lead AI-driven Engineering
  • Lead the development of an AI-assisted, spec-driven robot onboarding platform where AI generates service contracts, edge service specifications, SDKs, implementation guidance, and developer documentation.
  • Drive adoption of AI throughout the software development lifecycle to improve engineering productivity and platform quality.
Build the Organization
  • Recruit, mentor, and grow a world-class cloud engineering organization.
  • Build a culture centered on engineering excellence, ownership, customer obsession, and continuous innovation.
  • Coach engineering managers and senior technical leaders while developing future organizational leadership.
Deliver at Scale
  • Drive engineering execution across architecture, planning, prioritization, delivery, reliability, security, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Partner closely with Product Management to define roadmap and customer adoption strategy.
  • Collaborate across OCI AI, Cloud Infrastructure, Security, Networking, Developer Services, and strategic robotics partners.
  • Represent OCI Robotics Cloud in executive reviews, customer engagements, and strategic technology initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.
  • 12+ years of experience building distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, or enterprise software platforms.
  • 5+ years of engineering management experience leading multiple software engineering teams.
  • Proven experience defining and delivering large-scale cloud platforms from concept to production.
  • Strong technical background in distributed systems, Kubernetes, APIs, microservices, cloud-native architectures, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Demonstrated success hiring and scaling engineering organizations.
  • Outstanding communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with cloud robotics, IoT, autonomous systems, or edge computing platforms.
  • Familiarity with ROS 2 and modern robotics software architectures.
  • Experience with DDS, MQTT, OPC-UA, VDA5050, or related robotics communication technologies.
  • Experience building developer platforms, SDKs, APIs, or service contract frameworks.
  • Experience with AI-assisted software development, developer productivity platforms, or agentic AI systems.
  • Exposure to embodied AI, vision-language models, robot fleet management, digital twins, or teleoperation platforms.
  • Experience working with heterogeneous hardware ecosystems and partner integrations.
Why Join Us
  • Build Oracle's cloud platform for the next generation of intelligent robotics.
  • Pioneer AI-driven, spec-based robot onboarding technologies.
  • Define the open cloud interfaces that enable robots from any vendor to integrate with OCI.
  • Lead one of Oracle's newest strategic engineering organizations.
  • Collaborate with world-class engineers across OCI AI, Cloud Infrastructure, Security, and Developer Services.
  • Shape Oracle's long-term strategy for cloud robotics, AI, and autonomous systems.
Vision

Our vision is to make robot onboarding as simple as cloud onboarding.

We believe AI will fundamentally transform how robots are integrated into enterprise systems by automatically generating service contracts, edge services, SDKs, APIs, implementation guidance, and operational best practices.

OCI Robotics Cloud is building the cloud platform that allows any robot—from any vendor—to securely connect to Oracle Cloud through standardized interfaces rather than custom integrations.

As Director of OCI Robotics Cloud, you will build the engineering organization that turns this vision into reality.

Certain U.S. based or U.S. customer or client-facing roles may be required to comply with applicable requirements, such as immunization/occupational health mandates, and/or drug testing requirements.
