Job description

Under general supervision of the Director of Laboratory Operations and in collaboration with the Analysis and Reporting team, the Clinical Data Abstractor will support the clinical laboratory by reviewing patient medical records, organizing clinical information, and preparing cases for downstream analysis including post-accessioning second review. This position is responsible for abstracting key clinical data from electronic health records, preparing standardized case documentation, maintaining laboratory databases, ensuring required documentation is complete, and supporting laboratory workflows through administrative and operational activities. The Clinical Data Abstractor will work closely with Clinical Genomic Analysts/Scientists and laboratory personnel to promote accurate, efficient, and timely patient reporting. Must be eligible to work in the United States.
Responsibilities:
  • Review patient medical records, pathology reports, and laboratory results to identify, abstract, and organize clinically relevant information
  • Perform quality review of incoming samples by reviewing test requisition forms (TRFs), specimen labels, patient demographics, and supporting documentation. Collaborate with the Customer Service team to resolve discrepancies, obtain missing documentation, and ensure cases meet laboratory requirements prior to analysis
  • Prepare clinical summaries and case documentation by organizing patient demographics, clinical history, previous genomic testing and findings, and test order information to support variant interpretation and clinical reporting
  • Maintain internal laboratory databases, spreadsheets, knowledge resources, and other records that support clinical reporting and laboratory operations
  • Provide administrative and operational support for laboratory workflows, quality improvement initiatives, documentation, and other projects that support the clinical laboratory
  • Performs general duties such as maintaining safety records in adherence to compliance in line with established protocols
  • Maintains effective communication within the department and with other internal and external clinical and research professionals
  • Maintain a positive attitude when faced with challenges

Education and Experience Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, Nursing, Public Health, or a related scientific discipline
  • Prior experience in regulated laboratory environment (e.g. CLIA, CAP) is preferred

Required knowledge:
  • Familiarity with specimen receipt, review of TRFs, and accessioning workflows
  • Understanding of medical/oncology terminology, pathology reports, and/or genomic testing is preferred
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Work successfully in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy
