Overnight Rf Test Engineer information

What does an overnight RF test engineer do?

An Overnight RF Test Engineer is responsible for testing and analyzing radio frequency (RF) components, systems, or devices during overnight shifts. Their duties include setting up test equipment, running diagnostic tests, troubleshooting performance issues, and documenting results to ensure systems meet technical specifications. Working overnight ensures continuous operations and helps companies meet tight production schedules. These engineers typically work in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, or electronics manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight RF test engineer?

To thrive as an Overnight RF Test Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, RF theory, troubleshooting, and often a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with RF test equipment (such as spectrum analyzers and network analyzers), automated test systems, and programming languages like Python or LabVIEW is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to work independently during overnight shifts are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure accurate testing, timely issue resolution, and reliable operation of RF systems crucial for continuous production or research environments.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight RF test engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Overnight RF Test Engineers often face challenges such as troubleshooting complex equipment issues with limited immediate support, managing fatigue due to unconventional hours, and ensuring consistent communication with daytime teams. To address these, it's important to document test results thoroughly, establish clear handover procedures, and leverage remote support tools. Building strong relationships with both day and night shift colleagues can also help streamline problem-solving and maintain productivity.

What is the difference between Overnight Rf Test Engineer vs Rf Test Technician?

AspectOvernight Rf Test EngineerRf Test Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related field, certifications may be preferredAssociate's degree or technical certification in electronics or RF testing
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, testing facilities, often overnight shifts for continuous testingTesting labs, production lines, hands-on testing environment
ResponsibilitiesDesigning, analyzing, and overseeing RF tests, troubleshooting complex issuesPerforming RF tests, recording data, maintaining test equipment

While both roles involve RF testing, the Overnight Rf Test Engineer typically handles complex testing procedures, analysis, and design oversight, often working overnight shifts. The Rf Test Technician focuses on executing tests, data collection, and equipment maintenance. The engineer role requires more advanced education and analytical skills, whereas the technician role emphasizes hands-on testing and operational tasks.

Role Summary Description

We are seeking a Senior RF Test Automation Engineer to develop and deploy automated RF production test solutions for next-generation Wi-Fi products. This role sits at the intersection of RF engineering, software development, and high-volume semiconductor manufacturing. The ideal candidate combines strong RF measurement knowledge with advanced C++ software development experience and a passion for automation.

Unlike traditional test engineering positions, this role enables you to shape the future of test automation through software ownership and technical influence. You will create automated code generation capabilities, develop reusable code libraries and framework building blocks, and establish standardized test software architectures that can be rapidly adapted across diverse ATE programs. Your work will help solve complex RF measurement challenges and advance next-generation manufacturing test infrastructure on a global scale.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop automated RF ATE test solutions for NPI and high-volume production.

• Design scalable and maintainable software frameworks primarily in C++.

• Support Cohu RedDragon test platform.

• Improve yield, throughput, multisite efficiency, and test coverage.

• Develop package, wafer probe and characterization test solutions

• Interface with RF instrumentation and semiconductor production equipment.

• Transfer robust test solutions to global manufacturing partners.

• Drive continuous improvement through automation and data-driven analysis.

Required Qualifications

• BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

• 5+ years in RF test, semiconductor test engineering, or test automation.

• Strong C++ development skills.

• Experience with Python and/or C# and/or Lab View

• Unix/Linux and Windows development experience.

• Proficiency with Git-based source control and collaborative software development workflows

• Familiarity with modern software development practices including object-oriented design, software architecture

and design patterns, code reviews, automated unit and integration testing, CI/CD methodologies, and software

quality and maintainability principles.

• Familiarity with modern AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar

solutions for software development, code review, debugging, productivity improvement, and technical

documentation.

• Knowledge of SPI, I2C, and MIPI protocols.

• Strong analytical, debugging, and communication skills

• Ability to work effectively across Design, Product Engineering, Manufacturing, and Software Development

teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Hands-on Cohu RedDragon experience.

• RF FEM, PA, LNA, switch, coupler, duplexer, or multiplexer testing experience.

• Experience with VNAs, signal generators, spectrum analyzers, power meters, tuners, and SMUs from various RF equipment manufacturers like Keysight, NI and R&S.

• Familiarity with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE, and 5G technologies.

• Wafer probe and package test expertise.

• Experience supporting offshore manufacturing sites.
