Overnight Rf Ic Design Engineer information

What does an Overnight RF IC Design Engineer do?

An Overnight RF IC Design Engineer specializes in designing and testing radio frequency integrated circuits (RF ICs) during overnight shifts. These engineers work on developing and optimizing components used in wireless communication devices, such as amplifiers, mixers, and oscillators. Their role involves circuit simulation, layout design, prototype testing, and troubleshooting to ensure performance and reliability. Working overnight may be necessary to support round-the-clock product development or manufacturing processes, especially in global or fast-paced industries.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight RF IC Design Engineer?

To thrive as an Overnight RF IC Design Engineer, you need a deep understanding of RF circuit design, semiconductor physics, and analog/digital integration, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with industry-standard tools such as Cadence, ADS, and SPICE simulators, along with familiarity with layout and verification processes, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate across teams and troubleshoot complex issues efficiently. These skills ensure the successful design and implementation of high-performance RF integrated circuits that meet stringent specifications and project timelines.

What are some common challenges faced by an Overnight RF IC Design Engineer, and how can they be managed effectively?

Overnight RF IC Design Engineers often navigate challenges such as tight project deadlines, troubleshooting complex analog and RF circuit issues, and ensuring seamless communication with global teams working across different time zones. Managing these challenges effectively involves strong organizational skills, proactive documentation, and regular updates with daytime engineering teams to maintain project continuity. Additionally, leveraging simulation tools and rigorous testing protocols can help identify and resolve potential design issues before they escalate, ensuring high-quality outcomes even when working independently during overnight shifts.

Working alongside a highly experienced engineering team, this position offers the opportunity to contribute to challenging, high‑performance receiver and frequency conversion designs operating through 18 GHz and beyond. The ideal candidate is a hands‑on engineer with a passion for solving complex RF problems, advancing innovative technologies, and supporting mission‑critical solutions for defense and aerospace applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support the design and development of state‑of‑the‑art, RF/microwave receivers, frequency‑converters and related products for SIGINT, EW and radar applications.
  • Participate in the design, analysis, integration, and test of RF/microwave circuitry operating through at least 18 GHz using SMT components and PCB substrates.
  • Assist in requirements analysis, frequency planning, and subsystem‑level architecture development under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Contribute to the development of high‑performance RF systems with challenging requirements for bandwidth, dynamic range, noise figure, etc.
  • Serve as an individual RF/MW design contributor and support engineer for key design projects.
  • Support schematic capture, simulations, PCB layout review, integration, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Perform RF testing, data analysis, and documentation of design results.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline and 2 years related experience in the area of RF/microwave circuit design.
  • Experience performing top‑level requirements analysis and design of system architecture, allocating functional requirements for sub‑assemblies.
  • Experience in design of RF/MW circuitry through at least 18 GHz using SMT components on PCB substrates.
  • Hands‑on design experience in PCB‑based design of RF/MW circuitry supporting receivers and frequency converters to 18 GHz and beyond.
  • Familiar with receiver/frequency converter system design, including frequency planning and spur analysis, RF/MW filter technologies, cascade GNIP analysis, MW mixers, frequency generation using PLL ICs, and design trade‑offs.
  • Must be able to work as an individual contributor as well as with a diverse group of engineering disciplines.
  • Candidate must be familiar with computer design tools including Keysight Genesys, OrCad, MATLAB, PSPICE, or other tools.
  • Must have the ability to obtain security clearance.
