Role Overview
The SQL Server & Azure Infrastructure Engineer supports a database infrastructure migration from an AWS/Amazon environment to Microsoft Azure. This role focuses on assessing existing SQL Server environments (ranging from SQL Server 2008 through current releases), identifying compatibility dependencies, executing migration cutovers, validating data integrity, and stabilizing the target Azure environment post-migration.
Key Responsibilities

Database Migration & Assessment
• Assess, plan, and execute SQL Server database infrastructure migrations from AWS to Microsoft Azure.
• Evaluate current-state SQL Server environments (versions 2008 through current releases), configurations, workloads, and dependencies.
• Identify legacy compatibility risks, technical dependencies, and remediation paths to ensure smooth cloud migration.
• Execute cutover plans, rollback strategies, and post-migration validation to verify data integrity, connectivity, and performance.
Azure SQL Infrastructure & Operations
• Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot production SQL Server workloads and database services within Microsoft Azure.
• Perform database performance analysis, query tuning, and capacity optimization for cloud-hosted databases.
• Support database security, backup and recovery, high availability, and operational governance across migrated environments.
Troubleshooting & Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Investigate and resolve complex database and infrastructure issues during migration and post-migration stabilization phases.
• Collaborate with application, cloud, networking, security, and infrastructure teams to resolve technical blockers.
• Document current-state configurations, technical migration procedures, decision logs, and final-state architecture diagrams.
Required Qualifications
• 5 or more years of hands-on Microsoft SQL Server administration and database infrastructure experience.
• Demonstrated experience supporting legacy and modern SQL Server environments (from SQL Server 2008 through current releases).
• Strong hands-on experience configuring, troubleshooting, and supporting database workloads within Microsoft Azure.
• Proven experience executing database, cloud, or infrastructure migrations and modernization initiatives.
• In-depth knowledge of SQL Server configuration, performance tuning, security, connectivity, and backup/disaster recovery.
• Demonstrated ability to identify and remediate compatibility issues when modernizing legacy database versions.
Preferred Qualifications
• Direct experience migrating SQL Server workloads specifically from AWS to Microsoft Azure environments.
• Hands-on experience with Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, or Azure VMs running SQL Server.
• Familiarity with Azure networking, identity management, monitoring tools, and security controls related to database workloads.
• Relevant Microsoft certifications (e.g., Azure Database Administrator, Azure Solutions Architect, or SQL Server certifications).
• Prior consulting or professional services experience supporting large-scale enterprise cloud migrations.
Core Skills & Attributes
• Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and root-cause-analysis capabilities.
• Strong technical documentation skills to create clear runbooks, migration steps, and architecture records.
• Self-sufficient mindset with the ability to work independently in a fully remote consulting team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills to coordinate effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
