Work Schedule Summary
Full-time, entirely outpatient position without scheduled inpatient service or overnight call responsibilities.
The weekly clinical schedule includes two full days of general pediatric cardiology clinic and one full day of Pediatric Preventive Cardiology Clinic. Clinic location assignments and the remainder of the work schedule will be based on programmatic and patient-care needs.
Monday through Friday from 8:00 am- 5:00 pm. Scheduled shifts may vary depending on operational needs. As with any active medical practitioner, hours may extend to accomplish the work required that particular day.
Opportunities for a hybrid telework schedule may be available if supported by operational needs after training period is complete provided the arrangement is supported by operational needs and individual performance. Telework arrangements are not guaranteed and may be modified or discontinued at any time based on business requirements or performance. Employees approved for hybrid telework must provide their own private workspace, secure internet connection, and demonstrate the ability to work independently.

Job Summary
The Division of Pediatric Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine is seeking a Preventative Cardiology Physician Assistant to join the outpatient cardiology team at Primary Children's Hospital.
The successful candidate will provide care for children and adolescents with a broad range of cardiovascular conditions. The position will include one full day each week in the Pediatric Preventive Cardiology Clinic and two full days each week in general pediatric cardiology clinics. Clinics may be located at the Eccles Outpatient Services Building in Salt Lake City, Primary Children's Hospital Miller Family Campus in Lehi, or the Intermountain Layton Hospital outpatient clinic, based on programmatic and patient-care needs.
This is an entirely outpatient position without scheduled inpatient service or overnight call responsibilities.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Clinical
  • Provide comprehensive outpatient evaluation and management of children and adolescents with known or suspected cardiovascular conditions, including murmurs, chest pain, palpitations, syncope, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Conduct two full days of general pediatric cardiology clinics each week with the support of attending pediatric cardiologists.
  • Conduct one full day of Pediatric Preventive Cardiology Clinic each week with the support of attending pediatric cardiologists.
  • Order, review, and communicate the results of laboratory testing, electrocardiograms, ambulatory rhythm monitoring, echocardiograms, and other diagnostic studies within the Physician Assistant's scope of practice.
  • Provide counseling regarding cardiovascular risk reduction, nutrition, physical activity, medication adherence, and other preventive health strategies.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, dietitians, genetic counselors, exercise specialists, pharmacists, and other multidisciplinary team members to provide coordinated, patient- and family-centered care.
  • Provide follow-up communication, results management, medication management, documentation, and care coordination for assigned patients.
  • Facilitate appropriate referrals and transitions of care within the Heart Center and across other pediatric specialties.
  • Maintain timely, accurate, and complete clinical documentation.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, teamwork, and reliability.
Program Development and Academic Work
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives designed to improve access, clinical outcomes, patient experience, care coordination, and operational efficiency.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of standardized clinical pathways, protocols, and patient-education materials.
  • Support data collection and review of program metrics for general and preventive cardiology clinics.
  • Contribute to the continued development and expansion of outpatient pediatric cardiology services across Primary Children's Hospital locations.
Reporting Relationship
This position reports to the Division Chief of Pediatric Cardiology or the Division Chief's designee and works collaboratively with the medical directors and clinical leadership of the general and preventive cardiology programs.

  • This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 100 pounds and may consistently require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment, or patients while providing medical care. Workers in this position may be exposed to infectious diseases and may be required to function around prisoners or behavioral health patients.
The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.
Minimum Qualifications
Required:
  • Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant from the State of Utah.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.
Preferred:
  • Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
