What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight Matlab Simulation Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Matlab Simulation Engineer, you need strong skills in mathematical modeling, simulation design, and proficiency with Matlab/Simulink, often backed by a degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Experience with version control systems, scripting languages, and relevant certifications in Matlab can enhance your technical toolkit. Effective problem-solving, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently during overnight shifts are standout soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accurate, efficient development and troubleshooting of simulations, supporting project timelines and critical overnight operations.

What are some unique challenges faced by Overnight Matlab Simulation Engineers and how can they be addressed?

Overnight Matlab Simulation Engineers often work independently during off-peak hours, which can present challenges such as limited immediate access to colleagues for troubleshooting or support. Managing large-scale simulations that take several hours to run also requires strong organizational and time-management skills to monitor multiple processes and document findings efficiently. To address these challenges, it's helpful to maintain clear communication with the day team through detailed handover notes, use robust version control practices, and set up automated alerts for simulation errors or completions. Proactively collaborating with colleagues during overlap hours can also enhance workflow and ensure continuity.

What does an Overnight Matlab Simulation Engineer do?

An Overnight Matlab Simulation Engineer is responsible for developing, running, and monitoring simulations in Matlab during overnight shifts. They often handle tasks such as automating simulation workflows, analyzing simulation results, and troubleshooting issues that arise during the night. Their work ensures that simulation projects progress continuously and that data is ready for engineers working during the day. This role requires strong proficiency in Matlab, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently during non-standard hours.

We are seeking a MATLAB/Simulink Toolbox Developer to support the development of advanced modeling and simulation tools for aerospace and defense applications. This role focuses on the architecture, development, validation, and sustainment of custom MATLAB/Simulink toolboxes used in the design and analysis of motion control and control actuation systems for mission-critical platforms. The ideal candidate will have experience developing robust, maintainable, and verification-ready software tools in regulated, high-reliability environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Toolbox Architecture & Software Development
  • Architect, develop, and maintain custom MATLAB toolboxes supporting aerospace control systems
  • Design modular, scalable, and configuration-controlled software frameworks
  • Develop object-oriented MATLAB code aligned with defense software best practices
  • Package, version, and deploy toolboxes for engineering teams across multiple programs
  • Support long-term sustainment and lifecycle management of developed tools

Simulink Library & Model Development
  • Develop and maintain structured Simulink libraries and reusable components
  • Create parameterized, high-fidelity models of electromechanical control actuation systems
  • Implement motion control algorithms within model-based design environments
  • Ensure models are structured to support verification, validation, and traceability requirements

Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Support
  • Support model-based design workflows aligned with aerospace and defense standards
  • Maintain bidirectional traceability between system requirements and simulation models
  • Assist in preparation of technical documentation for design reviews (PDR, CDR)

User Interface & Workflow Development

  • Integrate simulation engines with intuitive workflows for program engineers
  • Implement visualization, reporting, and automated analysis features

Verification, Validation & Compliance
  • Develop automated testing frameworks for toolbox and model validation
  • Support software quality processes consistent with aerospace defense standards (e.g., DO-178 concepts where applicable)
  • Participate in internal and customer technical reviews
  • Maintain configuration control using version management tools

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical discipline
  • 3-5 years of professional experience with MATLAB and Simulink development
  • Experience developing and packaging custom MATLAB toolboxes
  • Experience building and maintaining Simulink libraries
