Mainframe Utilities Developer

Location: Phoenix, AZ / Charlotte, NC / Plano, TX
Duration: 12 months
Work Arrangement: Onsite/Hybrid – based on business requirements

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Utilities Developer to design, develop, maintain, and optimize utility programs supporting data processing, system operations, and batch workloads in IBM z/OS environments.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with JCL, DFSORT/Syncsort, IDCAMS, IBM utilities, batch processing, and mainframe automation, along with exposure to modern mainframe development and DevOps tools.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a technical administrator for mainframe development and utility tools, including:
    • BMC AMI DevX Code Pipeline (ISPW)
    • BMC AMI DevX Workbench
    • IBM Developer for z/OS (IDz)
    • CA-JCLCHECK
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance for mainframe utilities and batch processing environments.
  • Analyze and resolve complex technical issues requiring detailed evaluation of multiple factors.
  • Develop technical solutions and automate repetitive processes.
  • Lead individual projects or small-team technical initiatives.
  • Develop, enhance, and maintain reusable mainframe utilities.
  • Utilize and extend standard IBM and ISV utilities, including:
    • DFSORT / Syncsort
    • IDCAMS
    • IEBGENER
    • IEBCOPY
    • Other IBM SORT and dataset utilities
  • Support efficient data processing, batch workloads, and enterprise data movement.
  • Troubleshoot and debug batch processing issues.
  • Contribute to process automation and mainframe modernization initiatives.
Required Qualifications
  • 5–8+ years of mainframe experience.
  • 3+ years of experience focused on utilities development and batch processing.
  • Strong experience working in an IBM z/OS environment.
  • Hands-on expertise with:
    • JCL
    • Batch processing
    • DFSORT / Syncsort
    • IDCAMS
    • IBM mainframe utilities
  • Experience developing:
    • Data processing utilities
    • ETL batch processes
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills in mainframe batch environments.
  • Experience with z/OS and Horizon platforms.
  • Experience with z/OS UNIX System Services (USS).
  • Knowledge or experience with:
    • z/OS Connect
    • Jenkins
    • Ansible
    • IBM Developer for z/OS (IDz)
    • Eclipse-based development tools
Programming & Technical Knowledge

Experience or working knowledge of:

  • REXX and REXX Skeletons
  • COBOL
  • Python

  • IBM, Broadcom, and BMC mainframe utilities and software
Source Code Management / Development Tools
