For over 100 years, YMCA Camp Cormorant has offered spirit, tradition, leadership, and exceptional facilities to campers. Founded in 1903, Camp Cormorant is one of the oldest overnight camps in the entire nation. The camp is nestled on 80 acres of wooded property with an extensive beachfront on Big Cormorant Lake. We are located approximately six miles south of Lake Park, MN, in the heart of Minnesota lakes country. No day at camp is just a typical day. The YMCA Camp Cormorant offers more than just a job - we offer the chance to make a lasting difference for the youth in our community.
Under the supervision of the Camp Coordinator, this position will teach the basic skills necessary to safely ride a horse to all youth attending Camp Cormorant. This position will also care for the horses while at Camp.
- Ensures that the American Camping Association (ACA) standards are followed
- Establishes lesson plans for horsemanship.
- Teaches riding lessons to groups of campers safely and in a fun way.
- Assists with trail rides/lead arounds for Camp KODA and Family Weekend
- Responsible for the care of the camp horses, including feeding, watering, grooming, tacking, and healthcare needs.
- Responsible for the care of the barn and facility including cleaning stalls, water buckets, and water troughs, and keeping the tack room, feed room, rest room, and the barn in general neat and organized.
- Greets campers and parents upon arrival
- Supervises campers in restroom/showers/cabins 3 times per week
- Reports any accidents or incidents to the Camp Coordinator
- Attends meetings and actively participates in parent and camper check in.
- Assists with evening programs, campfire and leading songs; leads one evening per week
- Assists the Camp Coordinator in other areas of the camp when needed
- Is a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior. Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule and sportsmanship.
- Completes end of season evaluation
- Cleans all areas of responsibility on weekends and prior to closing camp for the season.
Requirements
- At least 18 years old
- 1 year of horsemanship experience - to include the care of horses
- 6 months experience in camping
- CPR/FA Certification for Adult, Child and Infant
- Current driver's license and YMCA insurance approved driving record
