Ready to shape the future of resilient communities?

Verdantas is seeking a Geology or Geotechnical professional to join our team and support field review of a wide range of geotechnical explorations. This position can work from our Lehigh Valley, PA, Wilkes Barre, PA, Philadelphia, PA, or Wilmington, DE office.

This role is primarily field-based, with the majority of time spent on active project sites overseeing and performing geotechnical drilling and subsurface exploration activities. You will oversee subcontractor drilling crews to observe and document soil, groundwater, and rock conditions, perform and document field testing, and ensure that field activities are executed safely and in accordance with project requirements. You will also collaborate with geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, and design teams to translate field observations into clear, concise subsurface data that supports analyses and project delivery.

This position requires frequent travel (approximately 90%), including overnight stays near project sites, and is well-suited for someone who enjoys hands-on, outdoor work and being directly involved in project execution from the ground up. The position requires an individual who is safety-focused, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in variable field conditions while communicating effectively with drillers, contractors, and engineering staff. A background in geology or geotechnical/civil engineering, the ability to perform physically demanding field work, and a strong interest in subsurface investigations and drilling oversight are essential for success in this role.

What You'll Do:

  • Oversee drilling and sampling operations on site including logging of geotechnical borings and test pits, in accordance with industry standards and project requirements

  • Familiarity with soil and rock classification, including using the United Soil Classification System

  • Maintain accurate and complete field documentation, including detailed records of sample locations, depths, subsurface conditions, and other relevant field observations.

  • Collect and describe soil and rock samples from explorations by describing soil lithology, classification, sample depths, and drilling observations to create accurate boring logs. Document groundwater conditions and in-situ measurements in the field logs, ensuring all subsurface data are properly recorded

  • Perform infiltration testing following Stormwater Best Management Practices Manual of various states and entities

  • Excellent communication skills to provide timely updates on field activities, site conditions, and data collection progress to geotechnical engineers and project managers

  • Able to create and implement project Health and Safety Plans that comply with applicable safety procedures, regulations, and project-specific requirements while maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment

  • Travel to work sites using a company vehicle. This position requires travel 90% of the time, including extended stays

  • Coordinate geotechnical site investigations, utility clearance, and drilling programs

  • Ability to follow company quality assurance procedures

  • Operate and maintain company vehicles according to company policy

  • Collaborate with other disciplines to assist with field work as the need arises

What You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field is preferred

  • 1 to 3+ years of experience with geotechnical logging or related field work

  • GIT or EIT is preferred

  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification or ability to obtain within 6 months

  • Certified PennDOT Drilling Inspector is a plus

  • Experience with BoreDM, gINT, and field data collection technology (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123, GPS equipment) is preferred

  • Capable of working primarily in an outdoor work environment and occasional office environment

  • Must be able to carry up to 50 lbs. regularly and up to 80 lbs occasionally with or without an accommodation, sometimes over substantial distances

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • Must have a valid driver's license in good standing

  • Ability to travel and stay overnight near worksites for several weeks at a time

Salary Range:

The compensation range for this position is $60,000 - $85,000, with final compensation determined based on years of experience, qualifications, and licensing status.
