Job Description - Concrete Estimator
Position Summary
The Concrete Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate, complete, and competitive estimates for concrete construction projects. This position reviews drawings, specifications, schedules, and other bid documents to determine project requirements, quantify concrete-related scopes, develop pricing, identify risks, and prepare proposals.
The Concrete Estimator will work closely with project managers, field operations, suppliers, subcontractors, and clients throughout the bidding and preconstruction process. Concrete scopes may include foundations, slabs-on-grade, structural slabs, elevated decks, walls, columns, site concrete, excavation, reinforcing steel, formwork, and other structural concrete work.
Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare detailed quantity takeoffs from construction drawings, specifications, and bid
  • Measure and quantify concrete, reinforcing steel, formwork, vapor barrier, embeds, anchor bolts, waterstops, insulation, and other related materials.
  • Estimate concrete scopes including footings, grade beams, foundations, slabs-on-grade, walls, columns, elevated slabs, structural decks, equipment pads, and site concrete.
  • Review plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, addenda, bid instructions, schedules, and contract
  • Develop labor, material, equipment, subcontractor, and general-condition
  • Obtain and evaluate pricing from concrete suppliers, reinforcing steel suppliers, equipment vendors, and
  • Prepare bid tabs, scope sheets, estimate summaries, labor breakdowns, and proposal
  • Identify drawing conflicts, missing information, scope gaps, constructability concerns, and potential project
  • Attend pre-bid meetings, site visits, scope reviews, and internal estimate review
  • Develop means and methods, crew assumptions, production rates, pour sequencing, and project schedules for estimating purposes.
  • Review subcontractor and supplier proposals for completeness, exclusions, qualifications, and scope
  • Maintain organized bid files, drawings, correspondence, vendor quotes, and estimate
  • Prepare clear and complete proposals, including scope inclusions, exclusions, clarifications, alternates, and unit
  • Participate in bid leveling, scope negotiations, value engineering, and client follow-
  • Track submitted bids and assist with post-bid communication and proposal
  • Prepare estimate handoff information for project management and field teams after
  • Maintain and update historical cost data, labor production rates, material pricing, and estimating
  • Build and maintain relationships with general contractors, owners, suppliers, subcontractors, and other industry partners
  • Perform other estimating and preconstruction responsibilities as Qualifications

Qualifications and Work Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in construction management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field is
  • Previous experience in concrete estimating, construction estimating, project engineering, or concrete construction is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of concrete construction methods, materials, sequencing, and
  • Ability to read and interpret civil, structural, architectural, and geotechnical
  • Understanding of reinforcing steel, formwork systems, concrete placement, and site
  • Proficiency with Bluebeam, Tekla, Microsoft Excel, and estimating
  • Strong mathematical, analytical, organizational, and problem-solving
  • High attention to detail and ability to produce accurate work under
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates and priorities
  • Strong written and verbal communication
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with project managers, field personnel, and the estimating
  • Willingness to ask questions, verify assumptions, and continuously improve estimating
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites and pre-bid meetings as need
  • Primarily office-based work with extended periods of computer
  • Ability to sit, review documents, and perform detailed takeoffs for extended
  • Occasional travel to project sites, pre-bid meetings, client meetings, and construction
  • Ability to walk active construction sites and navigate uneven terrain when
  • Ability to work additional hours when necessary to meet bid

Preferred Experience
  • Experience estimating commercial, industrial, institutional, multifamily, civil, or wastewater concrete
  • Familiarity with self-perform concrete
  • Experience preparing labor and equipment cost
  • Knowledge of union labor rates and local construction market
  • Experience with conceptual estimating, value engineering, and design-assist
  • Familiarity with project management, scheduling, and document-management
