Our organization is currently looking for a skilled Diagnostic Radiologist to oversee imaging services within the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES) at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware.

Dover Air Force Base is unique as it hosts the AFMES, a one-of-a-kind institution within the Department of Defense.

The AFMES is the sole medical examiner system authorized to provide comprehensive forensic investigative services to the Department of Defense and other federal entities worldwide. Their recovery teams can be deployed to any location on Earth within 48 hours of notification, regardless of environmental conditions.

Home to the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory (AFDIL), the AFMES plays a crucial role in the ongoing national mission to identify the remains of service members from past conflicts, including World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, as well as current operations.

The medical team collaborates with the Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations (AFMAO) and the Joint Personal Effects Depot (JPED) to ensure the respectful transfer, forensic identification, and honorable return of every American service member who passes away overseas.

Salary: Up to $400,000 annually

Dover Air Force Base is ideally situated in the Mid-Atlantic region, making weekend getaways to major cities and coastal areas very accessible:

• Philadelphia, PA: ~85 miles north (approximately 1.5 hours)
• Baltimore, MD: ~80 miles northwest (approximately 1.5 hours)
• Washington, D.C.: ~100 miles southwest (approximately 2 hours)
• New York City, NY: ~150 miles northeast (approximately 2.5 to 3 hours)

• Conduct diagnostic radiology casework in support of AFMES, the Defense Health Agency (HA/DHA), and the Department of Defense (DoD).
• Provide expert radiological consultations and peer-reviewed interpretations for global medicolegal investigations, utilizing advanced imaging techniques (CT, MRI, and digital radiography) to ascertain cause and manner of death.
• Interpret post-mortem imaging for active-duty service members, federal personnel, and other designated individuals to identify hidden trauma, foreign objects (e.g., projectiles, shrapnel), anatomical variations, and disease conditions.
• Collaborate with AFDIL and physical anthropologists to perform radiographic comparisons (such as antemortem vs. postmortem dental and skeletal X-rays) for the definitive identification of fragmented or mixed remains.
• Oversee and interpret all radiological examinations conducted by the Forensic Pathology Investigations Division.
• Perform diagnostic interpretations on all post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) scans, fluoroscopy, and traditional radiographs obtained during autopsies.
• Generate authoritative, legally defensible, and timely radiology reports detailing all skeletal, soft tissue, and visceral findings.
• Provide expert testimony in federal, military, or civilian courts regarding radiological findings, injury mechanisms, and identification methods.
• Oversee and implement current forensic radiology processes and develop future protocols.
• Standardize and update post-mortem imaging protocols to meet international standards set by the International Society of Forensic Radiology and Imaging (ISFRI).
• Promote the integration of emerging imaging technologies, such as post-mortem CT angiography (PMCTA) and advanced 3D surface scanning, into routine autopsy workflows.
• Direct the validation, calibration, and quality control of advanced radiological equipment in the mortuary setting, ensuring compliance with federal radiation safety regulations.
• Maintain extensive knowledge across all radiology modalities, with a focus on forensic radiology.
• Act as the Department of Defense Subject Matter Expert (SME) on forensic radiology, providing expert consultations to regional military treatment facilities and federal law enforcement agencies (e.g., FBI, AFOSI, CID).
• Maintain board-certified proficiency in cross-sectional imaging (CT/MRI), musculoskeletal radiology, and emergency/trauma imaging.
• Engage in active research, publish peer-reviewed literature in forensic radiology, and present at national military and civilian medical conferences to advance post-mortem imaging.
• Develop and oversee radiologic imaging service protocols, supervising and mentoring radiology technologists in the forensic environment.
• Establish training programs focused on post-mortem positioning, artifact reduction, and radiation safety protocols specific to forensic pathology.
• Lead the technical integration and troubleshooting of specialized Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) tailored for forensic and non-clinical storage.
