Gritt

South San Francisco, CA • On-site

Full-time

Job description

Gritt is an intelligent system that combines robotics and AI to build the infrastructure that pulls society forward. Gritt deploys via simple attachments to common equipment found on construction sites and autonomously performs labor-intensive tasks, verification, and planning. Gritt systems are already building critical infrastructure in the harshest outdoor environments, starting with large-scale solar. The founding team includes experts in robotics and AI from Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, and MIT. Gritt is backed by Obvious Ventures, Union Square Ventures, First Round Capital, Climactic, Congruent Ventures, and other leading firms.
Role: Field Software Engineer
Location: SF Bay Area (in-person), with regular travel to active job sites within the US
About the role
We're looking for a Field Software Engineer to be the bridge between our autonomy stack and the real-world job sites where it runs. You'll deploy, tune, and troubleshoot our robots' software directly in the field, working hands-on with perception, planning, and control systems as they encounter the unpredictability of live construction environments. This is a hybrid role: part software engineer, part on-site problem solver. You'll need to be as comfortable debugging a planner in the field under time pressure as you are writing production code back at HQ. Ideally, you have experience deploying robotics software in real-world conditions and enjoy owning a problem from root cause to shipped fix.
What you'll get to work on
  • Deploy and support our autonomy stack directly on robots at active construction sites.
  • Perform on-site troubleshooting and root cause analysis when robots misbehave in the field, and drive fixes back into the codebase.
  • Tune and calibrate sensing systems (LIDAR, cameras, IMU) for site-specific conditions and terrain.
  • Build and maintain tools for remote monitoring, telemetry, and diagnostics so issues can be caught and understood before they reach the field.
  • Act as the technical liaison between hardware, software, and site operations teams, translating field feedback into engineering priorities.
  • Author clear documentation and SOPs to support field deployments, operator training, and smooth site hand-offs.
  • Contribute improvements directly to the autonomy stack based on real-world deployment learnings.
  • Help optimize system performance and reliability under real field constraints (connectivity, power, weather, terrain).

What we look for
  • Degree in computer science, robotics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or other engineering disciplines (or equivalent experience).
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience deploying software for robotics or autonomous systems in real-world or field environments.
  • Experience with ROS2 and working across the autonomy stack (perception, planning, control).
  • Proficient in Python and C++.
  • Comfortable with on-site troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and operating under time pressure in unstructured environments.
  • Strong communication skills, with experience acting as a liaison across hardware, software, and operations/customer-facing teams.
  • Willingness to travel regularly to job sites, most commonly outdoor environments.
  • Should be comfortable taking ownership of tasks with light supervision.
  • Legally authorized to work in the US.
