Overnight Databricks Data Engineer information

What is an overnight Databricks data engineer?

An Overnight Databricks Data Engineer is a professional who works primarily during night shifts to manage, design, and maintain big data pipelines and workflows using Databricks, a cloud-based data analytics platform. Their responsibilities often include developing and optimizing data processing jobs, ensuring data quality, and troubleshooting issues that arise during overnight data operations. This role is critical for organizations that require 24/7 data processing, continuous ETL jobs, or real-time analytics. Working overnight may also involve monitoring automated systems, performing scheduled data loads, and collaborating with global teams to ensure data availability and reliability.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an overnight Databricks data engineer?

To thrive as an Overnight Databricks Data Engineer, you need strong proficiency in data engineering, Python or Scala programming, and experience with big data technologies, typically supported by a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Databricks, Apache Spark, cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and certifications like Databricks Certified Data Engineer are highly valued. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are essential soft skills, especially for troubleshooting and collaborating across shifts. These competencies ensure reliable data pipeline management and efficient resolution of issues during off-hours, maintaining seamless business operations.

What unique challenges do overnight Databricks data engineers face, and how can they be addressed?

Overnight Databricks Data Engineers often work with limited real-time support, which can present challenges when troubleshooting urgent data pipeline issues or system outages. To address this, it’s essential to develop strong problem-solving skills, document processes thoroughly, and leverage automated monitoring and alerting tools. Additionally, close collaboration with daytime teams during handoff periods ensures continuity and minimizes disruptions. Building a habit of proactive communication and maintaining detailed logs helps the entire team resolve issues efficiently and maintain data quality.

What is the difference between Overnight Databricks Data Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectOvernight Databricks Data Engineer
Work EnvironmentPrimarily remote or on-site, working overnight shifts to support global data operations
CertificationsDatabricks certifications, cloud platform credentials (AWS, Azure), data engineering certifications
Tools & TechnologiesDatabricks platform, Spark, cloud services, SQL, Python, ETL tools
Industry UsageTech, finance, healthcare, retail with 24/7 data needs

While both roles focus on data engineering, the Overnight Databricks Data Engineer specializes in managing data pipelines on the Databricks platform during overnight shifts, often supporting global operations. A Data Engineer may work across various platforms and shifts, with broader responsibilities in data architecture and pipeline development. The overnight role emphasizes specific platform expertise and shift timing, catering to organizations with continuous data processing needs.

Job description

Description

At CSpring, we believe in the power of data to drive decisions and real-world impact. We're a purpose-driven consulting firm specializing in data strategy, data engineering, and data analytics. Our clients span the public and private sectors, and our work helps them solve complex problems, gain insights, and achieve measurable results.

We're seeking talented professionals who are collaborative, curious, and committed to making a difference that thrive at the intersection of data, technology, and business strategy. Whether you're passionate about transforming public programs, enabling executive decision-making, or modernizing legacy systems, you'll find meaningful work and purpose here.

Why You'll Love Working Here

  • Purposeful Projects - Improve systems that serve real people by delivering smarter data, streamlined processes, and strategic insight.
  • People-First Culture - We're as committed to your growth as we are to delivering high-impact solutions. You'll find support, autonomy, and community here.
  • Strategic, Hands-On Work - From data architecture and documentation to client workshops and solution delivery, you'll influence every step of the process.
  • Collaborative Trust - Our clients rely on us to listen carefully, deliver consistently, and guide wisely. We partner with integrity, curiosity, and heart.

What You'll Do

You'll design, build, and support cloud data solutions on the Microsoft Azure stack for client engagements across government and healthcare.

  • Build and orchestrate data pipelines in Azure Data Factory, moving data from source systems into curated, analytics-ready layers.
  • Develop transformation logic in SQL, Python, or PySpark, and tune it so it holds up as data volumes grow.
  • Design and maintain data models - dimensional, relational, or lakehouse - that make sense to the analysts and reporting teams who depend on them.
  • Work in Azure Synapse, Databricks, Azure SQL, and Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 to build storage and compute patterns that fit the client's scale and budget.
  • Implement data quality checks, validation rules, and reconciliation so problems surface before a stakeholder finds them.
  • Build monitoring, alerting, and error handling into pipelines from the start, and respond when something breaks in production.
  • Manage code and deployments through Git and Azure DevOps, including CI/CD pipelines across development, test, and production environments.
  • Partner with client analysts, program staff, and technical leads to translate business questions into data requirements you can build against.
  • Document architecture, data lineage, and operational runbooks so the work is supportable after you hand it off.
  • Follow client security, privacy, and compliance requirements in how you access, move, and store sensitive data.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of hands-on data engineering experience, including 2+ years building on Azure.
  • Strong SQL - complex joins, window functions, stored procedures, and query performance tuning.
  • Practical experience with Azure Data Factory, including pipeline design, triggers, parameterization, and error handling.
  • Working experience with at least one of Azure Synapse Analytics, Databricks, or Azure SQL.
  • Python or PySpark for data transformation and automation.
  • Experience with data modeling and warehouse design concepts, including dimensional modeling.
  • Familiarity with Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 and how to organize raw, curated, and consumption layers.
  • Version control and deployment discipline using Git and Azure DevOps.
  • Clear communication with non-technical stakeholders - you can explain what you built and why it matters.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent hands-on experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior consulting or client-facing delivery experience.
  • Power BI or supporting downstream reporting and analytics teams.
  • Microsoft Azure certification (DP-203 or equivalent).
  • Experience with data governance tooling such as Microsoft Purview.
