Overnight Data Pipeline Engineer information

What is an overnight data pipeline engineer?

Overnight Data Pipeline Engineers are professionals responsible for managing, monitoring, and optimizing data pipelines during overnight hours. They ensure that data ingestion, transformation, and loading processes run smoothly while most business operations are offline. Their work is crucial for maintaining up-to-date data for analytics and reporting by the start of each business day. These engineers often troubleshoot issues, perform maintenance, and implement improvements to ensure data reliability and efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight data pipeline engineer?

To thrive as an Overnight Data Pipeline Engineer, you need expertise in data engineering, ETL processes, and programming skills in languages like Python or Scala, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with data pipeline tools such as Apache Airflow, Spark, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), as well as knowledge of database systems, is typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills, especially for resolving issues during off-hours. These skills ensure the reliability, efficiency, and timely delivery of data critical for business operations that depend on overnight data processing.

What are some common challenges faced by overnight data pipeline engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Overnight Data Pipeline Engineers often encounter challenges such as monitoring and troubleshooting data flows during off-hours when fewer team members are available. This requires strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently to quickly resolve issues that might impact downstream analytics or operations. Effective communication with both day and night teams is crucial, as is maintaining detailed documentation to ensure smooth handoffs. Proactively setting up automated alerts and robust error handling can help minimize disruptions and ensure data reliability during overnight runs.

What is the difference between Overnight Data Pipeline Engineer vs Data Engineer?

AspectOvernight Data Pipeline EngineerData Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning, building, and maintaining data pipelines that run overnight or during off-peak hoursDeveloping and managing overall data architecture, including pipelines, databases, and data models
Work ScheduleTypically overnight shifts or off-hoursStandard business hours, with flexibility for project deadlines
Skills & CertificationsSQL, ETL tools, cloud platforms, scripting languages, certifications like AWS or GCPData modeling, programming, cloud skills, certifications in data management or cloud platforms

While both roles involve data pipeline development, the Overnight Data Pipeline Engineer specializes in managing pipelines during off-hours, focusing on operational stability. Data Engineers have a broader scope, including designing overall data systems and architecture. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications, but their work schedules and specific responsibilities differ.

Job description

At CSpring, we partner with public and private sector organizations to turn complex data into decisions that improve real lives across Indiana and beyond. As a Cloud Data Engineer, you will build the modern Azure data platform that powers analytics, AI/ML, and enterprise integration for the missions our clients care about most. Your work makes it easier for everyone who comes after you to build reliable, scalable data solutions - so good engineering becomes the default, not the exception.
Why You'll Love Working Here
  • You'll do work that matters. The pipelines and datasets you build directly support programs that serve real people, not abstract business metrics.
  • You'll grow technically. We invest in Fabric, Databricks, Synapse, and the patterns that keep teams moving fast without breaking things.
  • You'll join a team that's warm and grounded. People here help each other, share what they know, and take pride in leaving the codebase better than they found it.
  • You'll have real ownership. You won't be a cog filing tickets - you'll own meaningful parts of the platform and see your decisions shape how it evolves.
  • You'll be set up to succeed. We believe in sound patterns and good defaults so that doing the right thing is also the easy thing.

What You'll Do
You will contribute directly to the design and implementation of data pipelines, transformations, and analytics-ready datasets across our Azure platform.
  • Design, implement, and maintain reliable Azure-based data pipelines that support analytics, AI/ML, and enterprise integration use cases.
  • Actively contribute code across the data platform - developing pipelines, writing transformations, optimizing SQL, and supporting production workloads.
  • Own specific areas of the platform - pipelines, datasets, transformations, or integrations - ensuring quality, performance, and maintainability.
  • Apply established patterns, frameworks, and standards to reinforce consistency and quality across the platform.
  • Work closely with data engineers, analysts, product owners, and stakeholders to translate business requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Stay informed on Azure data services and evolving platform capabilities, applying new tools or approaches when appropriate.
  • Contribute to CI/CD practices, testing, monitoring, and operational readiness for pipelines and the consumers downstream of them.
  • Help reinforce sound engineering patterns through your day-to-day work, so teammates "fall into the pit of success" when building on Azure.

Requirements
  • 4+ years of hands-on experience engineering data pipelines and data platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining cloud-based data solutions in Azure (or comparable cloud environments).
  • Practical, hands-on exposure to data lakes, data marts, and data warehouses; data pipelines and orchestration; and modern ELT/ETL patterns.
  • Strong coding ability using modern data engineering tools and frameworks.
  • Solid SQL skills for data transformation, optimization, and downstream consumption.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional teams.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field OR equivalent experience.
  • Located in or around Indianapolis, IN.

Bonus Experience
  • Azure certifications (e.g., Azure Data Engineer / DP-203) or equivalent cloud credentials.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines for data platforms.
  • Familiarity with Agile delivery and iterative development practices.
  • Exposure to streaming, near-real-time data, or observability/monitoring for data systems.
  • A genuine interest in continuous learning and technical growth within data engineering.

If you want to write high-quality code, own real parts of a modern Azure platform, and do it in service of work that matters, we'd love to meet you. Apply today!
