  • Position Summary

    Under the guidance of the Overnight Shelter Staff Coordinator, and in direction of the Assistant Director and Shelter Director, the Overnight Lead Advocate provides supervision, training, and ongoing support to shelter advocates; intervenes in resident crises; offers guidance and practical support to residential floor and YWCA advocates; completes statistical reports; and performs administrative tasks. This role fulfills direct care functions and serves as a critical link between shelter coordinators and director to continuously improve services for domestic violence survivors. Includes a 90-day evaluation period.

    Schedule: 30 hours/week, Friday – Sunday, 10pm–8am

    Essential Job Functions

    Supervision and Leadership
  • Provide Sanctuaryinformed supervision, mentoring, debriefing, and support to Shelter Advocates through individual and group supervision.
  • In coordination with Shift Coordinators, organize and facilitate training for new hires and ongoing staff per contractual requirements and best practice guidelines.
  • Provide onthejob coaching for daily crisis management and supervision across all residential floors.
  • Coach advocates in effective crisisresponse practices, including demonstrating protocols and assessing when to involve oncall directors.
  • Lead onsite crisis operations, collaborating with emergency responders and managing safety issues.
  • Reinforce Sanctuaryinformed psychoeducation across the shelter advocate role and processes.
  • Supervise daily advocate responsibilities and reinforce job expectations routinely.
  • Ensure compliance with DV Policies and Procedures.
  • Provide informal and formal performance feedback, including completion of performance appraisals.
  • Promote effective, timely ETO documentation and data entry; monitor log notes for accuracy and task completion.
  • Maintain and review shift task sheets; attend weekly meetings; strengthen crossshift communications.
  • Assist with interviews for new advocate hires. Additional duties as assigned.
  • Direct Services: Resident Support

  • Mentor and support residents through compassionate, respectful, strengthsbased service; conduct welcome/intake meetings for new residents.
  • Ensure resident safety by monitoring security and intervening in crises appropriately.
  • Promote healthy families through positive recreation and activities for residents and their children.
  • Educate participants and teens about healthy relationships and domestic violence dynamics; support their decisions about ongoing services.
  • Provide parenting education and support; help residents achieve selfdetermined program goals.
  • Provide information and referrals to internal and external support services, including mental health, substance abuse, and crisis services.
  • Encourage residents and staff to follow YWCA community standards.
  • Recordkeeping
  • Follow, teach, and coach ETO/VELA documentation protocols using realtime data entry procedures.
  • Assist with licensing compliance and quality assurance for participant files.
  • Complete incident and accident reports promptly and distribute to appropriate staff.
  • Maintain all records in accordance with DV protocols, YWCA policies, and contractual and legal requirements.

    Minimum qualifications: combined 5+ years of education and experience, including one of the following:

  • Bachelor's degree in women's studies, political science, public policy, communications, criminal justice, social work, or a closely related field
  • Associate's degree plus 4+ years of relevant experience
  • High school diploma plus 57 years of relevant demonstrated experience
  • Additional requirements:
  • Minimum 2 years' experience in domestic violence, traumainformed care, and substance abuse
  • Experience with staff supervision and management
  • Commitment to YWCA Utah's mission, antioppression work, and social justice
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention, women's issues, human behavior, and community resources
  • Commitment to cultural diversity and antiracism; ability to work assigned hours with flexibility for 24/7 shelter coverage
  • Proficiency with general office duties, computer systems, and technology
  • Fluency in English required; Spanish helpful; excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills
