Overnight Civil Structural Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight civil structural engineer?

To thrive as an Overnight Civil Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in civil engineering principles, structural analysis, and a relevant engineering degree, often supported by EIT or PE certification. Proficiency with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, and strong familiarity with building codes are typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills, especially when working independently during overnight shifts. These skills and qualifications are vital to ensure structural safety, project accuracy, and effective collaboration with day-shift teams.

What is an overnight civil structural engineer?

Overnight Civil Structural Engineers are professionals who specialize in designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of structures such as buildings, bridges, and tunnels during nighttime hours. Their work ensures that structures are safe, stable, and comply with relevant codes and standards. Overnight shifts may be required for projects that need to minimize daytime disruption, adhere to tight deadlines, or for sites that operate around the clock. These engineers must be skilled in structural analysis, project management, and often coordinate with construction teams and other engineers to solve problems that arise overnight. The role can involve both office-based design work and on-site supervision.

What is the difference between Overnight Civil Structural Engineer vs Civil Structural Engineer?

AspectOvernight Civil Structural EngineerCivil Structural Engineer
Work HoursTypically overnight shifts, often for maintenance or emergency projectsStandard daytime hours, regular schedule
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, maintenance facilities, or emergency response settingsDesign offices, project sites during regular hours
CredentialsSame as Civil Structural Engineer: Bachelor's degree, PE license often preferredSame as Overnight Civil Structural Engineer
Industry UsageUsed in industries requiring 24/7 operations like utilities, transportation, or emergency repairsGeneral civil engineering projects, infrastructure design

Overnight Civil Structural Engineers focus on maintenance, emergency repairs, or projects requiring overnight work, often in critical infrastructure sectors. Civil Structural Engineers work during regular hours on design and planning. Both roles require similar credentials but differ mainly in work hours and environment.

What are the unique challenges faced by overnight civil structural engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Overnight Civil Structural Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited access to on-site resources, reduced immediate support from day-time colleagues, and the need to make critical decisions independently. Effective communication with both the day and night teams is essential to ensure smooth project transitions and continuity. Utilizing detailed shift handover reports and leveraging remote collaboration tools can help bridge information gaps, while maintaining proactive communication with supervisors supports successful project outcomes.

Job description

At ANS, we're not just a consulting engineering firm-we're a team of trailblazers shaping the future of multi-disciplinary engineering. Recognized as one of the Best Places to Work and Top 10 Hottest Firm by Zweig Reports and featured in Inc. 5000's Top 250 for our staggering 1,748% growth, we're proud of what we've built and where we're headed.
We're allergic to bureaucracy, thrive on innovation, and embrace data-driven decisions. If you love collaboration, creativity, and a fast-paced environment, we might just be your perfect match!

We are seeking a Project Engineer - Structural with 5-8 years of experience to support the design and delivery of foundation and structural systems across a range of infrastructure and renewable energy projects. You'll work closely with senior engineers and contribute to projects from concept through construction, with a primary focus on structural design for solar tracker systems, equipment pads, and site development structures.

This position is ideal for someone with strong technical fundamentals, work ethic, and a desire to grow into a leadership role.
Structural Design & Engineering:
  • Participate in structural engineering efforts for utility substation projects including control enclosures, transformer foundations, dead-end structures, capacitor banks, and static masts
  • Review project documents and develop structural Basis of Design (BOD), including loads, design codes, geotechnical inputs, and material assumptions
  • Design and size shallow and deep foundations (e.g., spread footings, drilled piers, embedded posts) based on geotechnical recommendations and equipment loads
  • Perform load calculations (dead, live, wind, seismic) and develop structural models using accepted FEA tools (e.g., RISA, RAM, STAAD)
  • Coordinate with geotechnical engineers to integrate foundation performance assumptions and loading capacities (e.g., LPILE, MFAD inputs)
  • Prepare structural drawings, elevations, details, and specifications using AutoCAD and/or Revit for each milestone (30%, 60%, 90%, IFC)
Client & Vendor Coordination:
  • Coordinate with electrical engineers, control enclosure vendors, transformer manufacturers, and structure suppliers to obtain and interpret structural performance requirements
  • Support client-facing meetings to present a design approach and resolve technical comments
  • Review vendor-supplied structural performance requirements and incorporate into foundation and anchorage design
  • Respond to RFIs and submittals related to structural foundations, design assumptions, and special inspections
Other Areas of Focus:
  • Provide input on internal design standards, templates, and QA/QC processes for substation projects
  • Assist in developing resource plans, scopes, and estimates for future HV structural projects
  • Collaborate with civil and geotechnical teams to ensure fully integrated substation site design
  • Stay current on relevant codes (IBC, ASCE 7, NESC, etc.), utility standards, and AHJ requirements
Team Collaboration & Growth:
  • Coordinate with internal geotechnical and civil teams for integrated design
  • Attend internal design meetings and client calls as needed to stay aligned with project objectives
  • Receive mentorship from senior engineers with the opportunity to gradually take on more responsibility
  • Participate in internal learning, development, and project closeout reviews
While the focus of this role is in renewable energy, you'll also support general structural engineering work, including:

  • Analysis of structures for wind, snow, and seismic loads using ASCE 7 and IBC
  • Structural design for deep and shallow foundations (e.g., spread footings, piers, caissons)
  • Design and detailing of framing systems and structural components in steel, concrete, aluminum, FRP, and masonry
  • Structural condition assessments and live load evaluations
  • Coordination with manufacturers and development of foundation designs for prefabricated structures
  • Construction support including review of change orders, submittals, and field questions
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • EIT certification required, PE in progress preferred
