How much do overnight bobtail jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for overnight bobtail in the United States is $20.42, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.27 and $22.84 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the main challenges faced by Overnight Bobtail drivers, and how can they prepare for them?

Overnight Bobtail drivers often face challenges such as fatigue from late-night shifts, reduced visibility on the road, and limited access to open service facilities. To prepare, it's important to maintain a healthy sleep schedule, stay vigilant for changing road conditions, and plan routes to ensure fuel and rest stops are accessible during off-hours. Building strong communication with dispatch and other team members also helps address unexpected issues efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight Bobtail Driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight Bobtail Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), a clean driving record, and experience with local delivery or freight transportation. Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs), GPS navigation, and safety inspection protocols is essential. Reliability, attention to detail, and strong time-management skills help drivers excel in overnight shifts and meet delivery deadlines. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring on-time, safe deliveries and maintaining compliance with transportation regulations.

What is an Overnight Bobtail driver?

An Overnight Bobtail driver is a commercial truck driver who operates a 'bobtail' truck, which means driving a tractor without a trailer, typically during nighttime hours. These drivers are responsible for moving tractors between locations, returning to base after deliveries, or preparing vehicles for their next assignment. Overnight shifts often require drivers to work late evenings or throughout the night, ensuring trucks are where they need to be for daytime operations. The job may involve long hours, safe driving practices, and adherence to Department of Transportation regulations.
