What is an overnight AWS Serverless Developer?

An Overnight AWS Serverless Developer is a software engineer who specializes in building and maintaining serverless applications on Amazon Web Services (AWS), working during overnight or non-standard hours. They use AWS services like Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, and others to create scalable, event-driven solutions without managing traditional server infrastructure. These developers often handle real-time system monitoring, troubleshooting, and deployments to ensure 24/7 system reliability. Their overnight shift helps businesses maintain continuous development and support, especially for global operations or time-sensitive projects.

What are some unique challenges faced by an overnight AWS Serverless Developer, and how can they be managed?

Overnight AWS Serverless Developers often work independently or with a small team during off-peak hours, which can present challenges such as limited immediate support from colleagues or stakeholders and the need to troubleshoot issues quickly to minimize downtime. Strong documentation skills and proactive communication are essential for handing off progress to daytime teams. Additionally, developers must be adept at monitoring and maintaining serverless applications, addressing issues like scaling, performance, and unexpected errors during the night. Familiarity with AWS CloudWatch, Lambda, and automated alerting tools can help streamline these responsibilities and ensure seamless operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight AWS Serverless Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight AWS Serverless Developer, you need expertise in cloud computing, proficiency in programming languages like Python or Node.js, and a solid understanding of AWS services such as Lambda, API Gateway, and DynamoDB. Familiarity with AWS CloudFormation, CI/CD pipelines, and certifications like AWS Certified Developer are commonly expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills, especially when working independently during overnight shifts. These competencies ensure robust, scalable solutions and reliable system maintenance without direct supervision, supporting uninterrupted business operations.

What is the difference between Overnight Aws Serverless Developer vs Cloud Engineer?

  • Define the architectural vision for cloud-native, event-driven systems across Orion

  • Lead design for new platforms, subsystems, and cross-cutting capabilities that support Orion's growth and scale

  • Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipelines that support rapid, consistent deployment

  • Serve as Orion's top technical expert in AWS architecture and serverless engineering

  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and direction to engineers, senior engineers, and tech leads

  • Lead design reviews, complex debugging efforts, and operational excellence initiatives

  • Drive adoption of new AWS services, modern distributed system patterns, and emerging technologies-including generative and agentic AI

  • Partner with Product, Security, DevOps, and business stakeholders to ensure technical decisions support Orion's strategic goals.

  • Champion secure coding practices, system hardening, and proactive risk mitigation

  • Build performant, resilient, scalable systems that self-heal and optimize cost

  • Serve as a trusted advisor across engineering teams and to senior leadership

  • Build strong cross-functional relationships to drive work that impacts multiple areas of the business

  • Independently define methods, strategies, and technical approaches for novel or ambiguous initiatives

  • Balance creativity and discipline to build solutions that deliver outsized impact

  • Maintain a continuous learning practice to stay ahead of rapidly evolving cloud engineering trends

  • Operate with a platform-owner mindset-thinking holistically about reliability, scale, and long-term maintainability

We're looking for talent who:
  • Has mastery of C#/.NET ecosystem

  • Has strong understanding of browser capabilities, web performance, and front-end architecture

  • Has exceptional debugging and problem-solving skills across the full stack

  • Tackles high-impact, highly ambiguous problems with no blueprint

  • Defines technical frameworks, patterns, and decision structures for other engineers to follow

  • Solutions directly influence Orion's long-term scalability, reliability, and competitive advantage

  • Builds influence networks across teams and guides engineering direction at scale

  • Operates with full independence on new, critical, or technically undefined initiatives
