What is an overnight Angular frontend developer?

Overnight Angular Frontend Developers are software professionals who specialize in building user interfaces using the Angular framework while working night shifts or overnight hours. These developers are responsible for designing, implementing, and optimizing web applications to ensure seamless user experiences, often collaborating with remote or international teams. Their work schedule may cater to companies requiring round-the-clock development or support, or to align with clients in different time zones. They must possess strong skills in JavaScript, TypeScript, Angular, HTML, and CSS, along with the ability to troubleshoot and deliver high-quality code during non-standard work hours.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an overnight Angular frontend developer?

To excel as an Overnight Angular Frontend Developer, you need strong expertise in JavaScript, TypeScript, Angular framework, and a solid understanding of HTML/CSS, often backed by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, RESTful APIs, and build tools such as Webpack or Angular CLI is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication are key soft skills for this position, especially when working independently during overnight hours. These competencies are vital for delivering high-quality, maintainable code and ensuring smooth collaboration across different time zones.

What are the most common challenges faced by overnight Angular frontend developers, and how can they be addressed?

Overnight Angular Frontend Developers often face challenges such as limited immediate access to team members for support or code reviews, maintaining effective communication across different time zones, and managing productivity during night hours. To address these, it's important to leverage collaborative tools (like Slack or Jira) for asynchronous communication, document code thoroughly for smoother handoffs, and establish clear overlap hours with other team members when possible. Additionally, setting a consistent sleep schedule and creating a focused work environment can help maintain productivity and well-being during overnight shifts.

ILI manufactures, sells, and services employer-owned life insurance products for institutional and business clients, including Corporate-Owned Life Insurance (COLI), Bank-Owned Life Insurance (BOLI), and Insurance Company-Owned Life Insurance (ICOLI).

Ideal Skill Set

  • .NET: API development experience, including familiarity with LINQ for data querying.
  • Angular: Frontend development experience, with the ability to work within and extend existing Angular applications.
  • SQL: Working knowledge of relational databases and query writing.
Additional Preferred Skills

  • GitHub Copilot: Experience using Copilot to plan and execute package and version migrations—not solely for code generation.
  • Apigee: API proxy experience is a plus, especially for internal candidates familiar with Nationwide’s proxy enforcement rules. Strong external candidates can be trained in this area.
  • Technical documentation literacy: Ability to read and interpret technical changelogs, migration guides, and framework release notes, including identifying breaking changes in Angular versions that may affect the team.
Additional Qualifications
  • Independent ownership: Takes responsibility for assigned work, operates effectively with minimal direction, and navigates ambiguity to resolve blockers.
  • Self-directed debugging: Troubleshoots and resolves issues in their own code without relying on others as a first resort.
  • Curiosity-driven learning: Learns unfamiliar systems and functionality by tracing code, researching available information, and building understanding from first principles.
  • Legacy code literacy: Comfortable understanding and extending existing codebases. Much of the team’s work involves enhancing established systems rather than building entirely new applications.
  • Continuous learning: Motivated to stay current with the tools, frameworks, and development practices the team uses today and adopts in the future.

This role will work a hybrid schedule coming into the Columbus, Ohio office 2 days per week on Mondays & Tuesdays.

This role does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization. Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program.
