What is an Overnight 7 Off RN?

An Overnight 7 Off RN is a registered nurse who works overnight shifts for seven consecutive days, followed by seven days off. This type of schedule is often found in hospitals or healthcare facilities that require 24/7 staffing. The schedule allows nurses to have a week of intense work, followed by a full week to rest or attend to personal matters. It can help with work-life balance but may also be physically and mentally demanding due to the long stretches of night shifts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Overnight 7 Off RN, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Overnight 7 Off RN, you need a valid RN license, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to work independently during night shifts. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), patient monitoring technology, and shift-reporting systems is essential. Excellent time management, resilience, and effective communication are vital soft skills for handling emergencies and collaborating with limited overnight staff. These skills ensure safe, high-quality patient care and smooth operations during less supervised hours.

What are some common challenges faced by an Overnight 7 Off RN and how can they be managed?

Overnight 7 Off RNs often encounter challenges such as managing patient care with limited night staff, maintaining alertness during long shifts, and balancing work-life schedules due to the unique 7 nights on, 7 nights off rotation. Effective time management, strong communication with other night shift team members, and establishing a healthy sleep routine are essential for success. Many RNs find that collaboration and hand-off communication with day shift staff, as well as using downtime for documentation and continuing education, can help streamline workflow and reduce stress.

Job description

WHO WE ARE

We are a nurse-founded hospice organization and a pioneer in end-of-life care since 1978. We are carers who advocate for our patients and their loved ones at the bedside. We take care of each other. We are proud to make a difference.

We are VITAS.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Description: The On Call RN position is responsible for working together to meet the physical, medical, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual needs of hospice patients and families facing terminal illness and bereavement.  The 24/7 Telephone Triage Nurses filter and triage all call. The Field Triage RN nurse will only see new admissions, death visits or anything that cannot be handle via telephone. They will receive their schedule and will be required to go to any of our locations to provide care for their patient. Responsibilities may include completing a RN admission, visiting a patient at an ALF, nursing home facility, home, hospital, or medical facility. The RN Runner nurse will work directly with the patient. The total amount of visits may vary per day. This position requires a medical license.

You will be a respected member of our team, both as a caregiver and as a hospice educator. You will be entrusted with the autonomy to make care decisions at the bedside, ensuring not a moment is wasted in bringing comfort to your patients. You will help patients and their loved ones understand and embrace the palliative—rather than curative—nature of hospice and the benefits of comfort-focused end-of-life care.

WHERE YOU’LL WORK

Each day is different for our home care RNs. You will spend most of your time caring for hospice patients in their home, ALF, nursing home facility,  hospital or medical facility, adjusting your schedule based on their needs. The total amount of visits may vary per day but on average it is 4 to 6.

About once a week you'll come to the office to meet with the rest of your interdisciplinary team: the social workers, physicians, chaplains, and nurses who work together to provide whole-person support for the patients and families we serve.
