An Outdoor Science job involves working in natural environments to study, teach, or apply scientific principles related to ecology, biology, geology, or environmental science. Professionals in this field may work as educators, researchers, conservationists, or field technicians. Their tasks often include conducting experiments, collecting data, leading educational programs, or developing conservation strategies. These roles are commonly found in national parks, research institutions, schools, and environmental organizations. Outdoor Science jobs require a strong understanding of scientific principles and a passion for nature and sustainability.

What does an outdoor science do?

A typical day in an Outdoor Science role often involves a mix of fieldwork—such as conducting environmental surveys, collecting soil or water samples, observing wildlife, and recording data—along with time spent analyzing results and preparing reports. You may also work with teams of researchers, educators, or community partners to carry out projects, troubleshoot research challenges, or lead educational activities. Work environments can range from remote natural areas to local parks or schools. Flexibility with weather, travel, and varying work hours is common, and safety protocols are a key consideration. For those who enjoy variety, teamwork, and hands-on science, this role offers a dynamic and rewarding experience.

To thrive in Outdoor Science roles, you generally need a strong background in environmental science, biology, or related fields, along with experience in fieldwork and data collection. Familiarity with GPS mapping tools, data analysis software, and certifications such as Wilderness First Aid or Leave No Trace are commonly required. Excellent observation, problem-solving, and communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and within teams, set top candidates apart. These abilities ensure accurate scientific research and effective outreach or education in diverse, often challenging, outdoor environments.

What job should I do if I love the outdoors?

Outdoor science jobs include roles such as environmental scientist, park ranger, conservation scientist, or field researcher.
