Job description

The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is seeking an experienced Outdoor Recreation Hiking Instructor to support community-based programs. In this contract role, you will deliver safe, high-quality hiking instruction in alignment with City policies and safety standards, creating a welcoming and engaging environment for participants of all ages and abilities. You will be responsible for planning and leading hikes and outdoor programs, managing participants, assessing trail and site safety, and preparing program materials. The role also includes trip planning and logistics, along with completing required attendance and incident reporting, while ensuring a positive participant experience and strong focus on safety. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include post-secondary education and/or experience in outdoor recreation programs and instruction, along with demonstrated knowledge of hiking practices and outdoor safety. You bring the ability to plan and lead engaging, inclusive programs for a range of participants, while maintaining a strong focus on risk management and participant experience. A minimum of one year of related experience is preferred, along with strong communication and customer service skills and experience with leading parents & tot programs is a strong asset. Valid Emergency First Aid with CPR Level C is required, with Wilderness First Aid or an equivalent 20+ hour certification considered an asset; a valid Class 5 Driver's Licence is preferred. A valid Class 4 Driver's Licence is highly preferred. Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered.

Pay Rate: $31.52 per hour 

Location: Barnet Marine Park, Deer Lake Park, Robert Burnaby, Byrne Creek, Central Park, other surrounding locations.

Hours of work: This is an auxiliary position, hours and shifts are based on operational requirements and do not provide guaranteed hours of work, which may include on-call shifts. Typical shifts /include Weekdays and weekends, class time average from 2 to 3hrs, with opportunity for growth, varying times.
