Position Summary

The Iron Worker is responsible for the installation, placement, and assembly of structural steel and heavy equipment components on construction and industrial job sites. This role involves working with rigging systems, cranes, hoists, hand tools, and welding equipment to position and secure steel structures, machinery, and related materials. Iron Workers perform tasks in physically demanding environments and must maintain strong safety awareness while working at heights, around heavy equipment, and on uneven surfaces.

Essential Job Functions

  • Set structural steel using cranes, hoists, or come-alongs and secure components with bolts and fasteners.
  • Assist with placement and installation of heavy machinery through rigging, hoisting, and positioning of equipment.
  • Cut, fit, and install handrails, sheet metal, and metal grating as part of structural assemblies.
  • Perform general jobsite housekeeping including removal of scrap materials, tools, and debris to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support project and operational needs.

  • Work performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, rain, snow, and ice.
  • Surfaces may include concrete, steel, debris, or uneven terrain.
  • Work may occur at heights, in confined spaces, or on elevated structures.
  • Exposure to noise, vibration, welding operations, and heavy equipment is common.

Physical Requirements

This position is classified as Heavy Work and requires significant physical exertion throughout the workday.

Movement and Positioning

  • Frequent standing for extended periods (3–6 hours per day).
  • Occasional walking across uneven or narrow surfaces, including steel beams.
  • Occasional bending, squatting, kneeling, and reaching while installing materials.
  • Occasional climbing of ladders or stairs and working in restricted spaces.
  • Continuous balancing and body positioning while working on elevated or uneven surfaces.

Lifting and Material Handling

  • Lift hand tools and materials weighing 1–50 lbs.
  • Lift larger tools or equipment weighing up to 130 lbs. with assistance or mechanical aid.
  • Carry tools and materials across the work site from 20 feet to 200 yards.
  • Push or pull equipment using ropes, hoists, chain falls, or mechanical devices requiring up to 100 lbs. of force.
